A friend is going to Shanghai real soon. Do u well-travelled photogs know which are the reputable places (camera shops or flea markets) to get camera gear in Shanghai? What are the good buys to look out for? TIA.

Last year, I went to Shanghai and noticed that the price of those branded camera or rather "foreign" camera, such as Nikon, Canon to be much higher than those sold in Singapore.
As for those local brand, I've no idea.

You can get locally branded cameras like the Phenix, which is more or less a Pentax K-1000 clone for a song. Comes with a cheapo 50mm, takes all K-mount lenses, and even built-in meter. Red Dawn has one, you can ask him.
