Hi... I know quite a few forumrunner here would go to HK to get their DSLR camera lense. But sadly..... I'm not going to HK anytime soon :embrass:

But the family is planning for a Bangkok, Thailand trip this sept school holiday. Was wondering.....

* Anyone here ever brought lense in Thailand ??
* Is the prices of Canon lense in Thailand cheaper then those in S'pore ??
* Which & where are the shops that is 'safe' to buy from ??

Could anyone helps here.... thxs

yes
MBK one of the upper storeys.
specialist in Canon. L lens cheaper. Another CS member bought.

enough to motivate my friend to buy
not talking about $2 difference

Since you are already planning to go to BKK in September than you should do your homework.

Find out what lens you intend to buy then find out how low you can buy them in Singapore. When you go to BKK you can compare the SGD and Baht prices. Take note that paying cash will be a bit cheaper than paying credit card, and you may also have more bargaining power with cash. Also note that you can claim VAT refund at the airport. But if Singapore customs find the lens in your luggage be prepared to pay 7% GST if your lens cost more than $400.

If the prices you see in Bangkok are not as cheap as you think, then you can buy them when you get back to Singapore.

From now to September lens prices (and foreign exchange) on both sides of the pond may fluctuate. Again, do your homework and plan!

Homework already done...... except which shop or where in MBK.

I even compare to only prices of 'greyset' lense selling in ClubSNAP...... since warrenty will be questionable.

Not worrying to much about local GST..... as I intend to buy only 1 L lens and will keep it inside my Camera Bag when bringing it home. My only 'fear' is that I would have to pay by credit card.... since if I have the cash, would have brought the greyset already :bsmilie:

Well, if another military coup was to take place (but I hope not)..... I'm sure the Thai baht will drop against the SGD.....

In that case, let me point you the way to fotothailand:

They have two or three shops in MBK. If you bring lots of hard cash, maybe you can get better prices than the ones shown in the website above. :D

May I ask if the lenses come with international warranty ?

Wow.... just took a look at the website..... can't say the price of the L lens I wanted is to my liking :(

The price quoted was almost $40K Baht..... about $1548+ SGD.... A greyset is selling $1600 SGD here... while shops here retail $1790 SGD......

So, unless the warrenty is accepted in S'pore..... I would rather just buy it here.

Sometimes you might get a good deal in Bangkok but the good deal may not be the lens/body that you want!

If your purchase is not urgent, than go to Bangkok first to check the shops. If the prices are not to your liking, then just go back to Singapore and buy the lens.

As for me, I have bought only accessories: a Benro plate for my ballhead (which was actually cheaper than buying from the guy selling in Clubsnap buy/sell) and a Lowepro camera strap which Cathay Photo does not bring in.

As I have said before, if you have cash you may negotiate a better price. Just bring you Sing dollars to MBK and if a good deal is struck, then just make way to the many money changers in MBK to change your dollars to baht.

Happy Shopping!
