Best Distance for Sigma 50mm 1.4 and Canon 550D

Hi All,

I'm newbie in photography, hopefully the "master" here can share some of the technique of using above combo. It seems i can only get a tack sharp copy at 1metre distance. Above that, it's soft focus. Used in 5dmk2 and all distance is sharp.

Anyone can share the technique or maybe some example too of portrait photo?

What apertures are you shooting at? Lighting conditions? Are you moving after locking focus?

Too many variables. Post a sample pic and maybe we can help more.

natural lighting, aperture tried from 1.4 to 5.6, with distance more than 1 m it's soft. If within 1 - 1.25 m if sharp. well, i never recompose the focus.. should i try shot on tripod instead?

Is the lens focusing? Manual focus mode accidentally? Do a structured test with different distances, leave aperture and all the rest constant. Do a focus test using test charts (read the instructions).

if photos are soft and AF is working try stopping down to between F4 to F8?

thanks all, i think its just at 1.4 and maybe my hand is shaking all the time - using tripod is ok
