Best 50mm for Pentax DSLR

85mm used to be my favorite portrait FL on Canon FF, so my hunt for the best 50mm on K5 begins. Currently I have only the A 50f1.4, so I shall start with this.

A 50f1.4 wide open on K5 shot in raw converted in Lightroom 3.3 and resized in Adobe photoshop.

Same lens at f2.8.

There are many 50mms so I will appreciate if you can post some portrait shots of your favorite as it will greatly help me. You can also include 55 and 58mm. Thank you all.

Thanks JK, I saw the thread but I would like to concentrate on the 50-58 mm FLs. I have the FA31 and 77 fixed. I want to look at these first.

Hi Anthony, perhaps you could define what your criteria for "best" is, so the Pentaxians here can help you out. For me, best has to do with size, reasonable sharpness at F/2.8 (F/1.4 has too narrow DOF for my uses). I don't really care about bokeh and all that.

Perhaps I'll leave it to Fengwei and some of the rest to show you the 50mm f/1.2 - think it's MF though.

Some of my shots with the 50mm FA F/1.4 for your use, it is my cat lens... And occasional I use it to shoot my loved ones. These days it's mixed with the 35mm f/2.4 - so cheap, yet quite a good performance, and way lighter. The 50mm f/1.4 still has a place in my bag though, that's for sure. It's sharper from f/2.0 onwards.

Are you talking about Canon 50-58mm FLs ? I think they do not fit the pentax... unless they are modded. I am holding on to a Canon 58mm FL... but cannot test.

Are you talking about Canon 50-58mm FLs ? I think they do not fit the pentax... unless they are modded. I am holding on to a Canon 58mm FL... but cannot test.

Yes FA 50f1.4 is within the 50-58mm range. Meaning, I want to see only Pentax or M42 mount lenses such as the 50f1.7, 50f1.4, 50f1.2, 55f1.4, 58f1.4. There may also be some odd 55f1.2 which I will like to look at also. For other focal lengths I am fixed with FA 31f1.8, FA 77f1.8 and K 135f2.5. Thanks for your help, and I appreciate your FA 50f1.4 images.

Just looked through my portrait gallery again (http://lepetitphotographe.smugmug.com/Portraits/People/7747675_h9TWQ#1191557033_a6NCH), and am surprised there're hardly any FA50mm shots. Most are taken by the DA70, with quite a few by the FA43, DA35 Ltd, and even DA21. I didn't realise how diverse they can get..

it trumps pentax's fa50 optically.. althought it's huge and slightly more exp

Revuenon 55mm f1.2

K 55mm f1.8

I always missing my M50 f1.7 after used for about 2 months and sold it away, if there is a chance I'm sure I will get it back, probably the F50 f1.7. Below are some of the photos taken with the M50 f1.7:
