Yes both are suitable.

my first DSLR is D90, does it really matter what camera u start off, as long as u read the manual and keep practicing u'll be fine

try both of them out and see which one feels better in your hands/ controls make more sense to you / preferred placement of buttons etc and you will know which system is for you

Read the reviews.
D90 is an old camera, look at the newer D7000. The Canon is 60D.
