Hello. I'm a newbie here and i hope to learn more and gain experience here. Photography had always been my interest (yet i'm in engineering line, lol).

Currently i dun have my own camera (sadly) and i've had to keep borrowing from my friends or my mum. Lots of hassle, pretty much. I've been longing for my own but DSLR is simply too ex for mi. So i plan to get a second hand DSLR canon camera, hopefully at a good price i can afford to buy. Preferably 300 to 500 bucks. Actually, i was hopin' somewhere cost 300 bucks but i know there's no such one since DSLR is costly... But if there is, do lemme know and i can buy it rite away! XD

Would anyone advise mi on how and where to get a second hand DSLR? A friend lent mi her DSLR 400D camera for one day before and i found it so awesome that i've set my eyes on 400D but a friend told mi i should take a more suitable camera since i'm still a beginner at photography. Now i dunno which DSLR i should get... Tried 450D before, it's pretty good but yeah.. like my frenz said juz now, i should take a suitable camera and, of cos, affordable...

Thanks..

Hi there, welcome to the world of photography, as you are saying you are finding a 2nd DSLR, you can go to the clubsnap personal classified section to find all sort of brands camera like canon etc.... but you also must be careful when buying 2nd carmera as you need to look out for shutter count etc... so all the best to find the suitable camera for your shooting.......... ;)

I wouldn't say 400D is "too advance" and "unsuitable" for a beginner, the only thing is you might find it difficult to find one at your budget. A 2nd hand 350D might be had at slightly more than $500, but you have to dig around at the BnS section.

I know mobilenerd is selling 2 sets of 350D. I bought my 400D from him, he's an honest seller.
Why not continue saving and then get the 400D you wanted?

for $300-ish, you can get a 300D with kit lens. of course it is an outdated model but still a DSLR with all the features. Give it a above average lens and you should be able to avoid the buy and buy virus that never fails to infect new dslr owners. That way you get to try without spending a small fortune and if your interest is there, by all means go for the more pro bodies.

Tons of engineers into photography if you look around. Me included.

Why don't you check out Classifieds here. I also noticed Canon 400D+kit $800 and 30D for 700bucks, if you're into mid end range, it's almost as good as the 40D, owned, tried and tested.

i'm one of them. :bsmilie:

tried a 350d before? the small lcd screen might turn you off. i'd prefer the 400d actually if i had a choice back then i purchased my dslr. but i'm happy with my 350d still. :)

Personally, I prefer the 2 displays of the 350D and also 40D and many other models. The small grey one is showing all current recording settings, the big colour one is for reviewing pictures and showing all other settings. Perfect combination for me.
The all-in-one display of 400D is too bright, huge letters and numbers like 'suitable for visually challenged persons'. Indeed, review is easier with bigger display, but that's only a couple of seconds. The rest is done at computer screen.

I think TS is aware of the B&S section. He is just asking for recommendations. With your budget, most likely it will be a very old 2nd hand or 3rd hand one. Why dun you be more patient and save up more! Besides I'm sure you will be able to save in no time with an engineer's pay! ;)

Maybe the D60 or D40 to start off?

Thanks for ur reccommendations, guys! :) But i'm still unsure of which i should get for a beginner. Haha.. HOw i wish i could buy D400 instantly e moment i get my pay! But sighz.. i've other things to pay n it's so expensive nowsday O_O so yeah, 2nd hand camera is one option i've considered for a long time.

I've not tried 350d before, i only tried 400d n 450d but 350d is on sale, so i'll try it as well as look around for it in classfied.

I'll be looking forward to be in world of photography! XD I'll update once i get 2nd camera! n also post! Cheers!

Hello...welcome. Hope you'll get your cam too.

Perhaps you would like to consider other brands too, there are lots of 2nd hand cams around.

Actually if you're really interested and have already read up a lot on photography and the related equipment, 400D is definitely not too advanced. You won't even need to read the manual to figure out how to use all its features.

best way to learn all the features is to do hands-on...shoot shoot shoot!

with $300 it's abit tight...like someone mentioned...best bet is 300D with kit lens...
i would suggest you go for 400D with kit lens at about $700...

there are many differenences between 300D, 350D, 400D and 450D so think thru what you need and what you don't...then there's the x0D series...you can always get a low end one to learn the basics...then move to newer models and sell off your old one...or simply keep it as a backup body...

"engineers are boring pple. they take up the most boring hobbies, which are so technical they bore most pple to death."

as quoted by a friend of mine...

** i am an engineer too. :p

mi 3...hahaha...mi in IT security...so many fields under engineering...think at least 10% of the work out there got the word engineer or similar in it...nowadays specialist seems to be the 'nicer' word for it...hahaha...
