Hi all ! I'm a newbie in photography. I would like to share an unpleasant experience i had over the wknd. I was at Vivo City on Sunday hoping to capture some shots of the bridal gowns fashion show. I was there sort of like abt 45 mins before the show. To my surprise, when i reached the stage, it was already full of photogs ( like 3 rows thick ). Well so i tell myself next time for events like these must come earlier.

The irritating thing is i see 4 or 5 pgs right in the second row standing on their step ladders right smack in the centre of the stage. All of them seemed like lao jiaos and were all using zooms. I was lucky enough to squeeze in the 3rd row by the side. As the time draws near...more pgs came and i could see all of them showing disappointment on their faces and many were shaking their heads at the group on step ladders. Can you imagine that almost the whole centre part from the stage is completely blocked by that inconsiderate group! As a pg, i feel pai seh cos when i turn bk i could see those true audiences some with their kids on their shoulders and some with their PnS all trying so hard to catch a glimpse but was denied a better view bcos of the rows of pgs in front and worst of all on step ladders!

Perhaps i may be wrong but i shud think that pgs shud use step ladders only at the rear of the audience. I didnt take much shots due to inaccessability but mostly bcos i felt lousy. For a moment...i felt so embarrassed at being a pg joining the squeezing in the front. Bcos of this incident, i've told myself that i will not put myself in these situation again.

I'm just curious if anyone has had experience like this before???

I think it is very common. Whenever I saw fashion shows in malls, there are always rows of photographers with big big lens crowding in the first rows.

Hi! Newbie here too.

There was a fashion show at AMK hub last april (i think) at the basement level. I had my dslr with me coz was out around amk central for my own walkabout. Didnt know about the fashion thing and i had no intention to shoot it anyway. But in front of the runaway got several pgs, as the term, standing around waiting for the show to start. And yes, a few of them were on step-ladders. There was even a small closed-off barrier for some of them. However, unlike your experience, there were only maybe less than 10 pgs and the place was actually not that crowded either. Everyone there was looking at the models and the clothes they were parading. I, however, was checking out the pgs' camera gears ;). Thats my experience anyway. Cheers! :)

at least they(pgs) put to an appropiate use of what a step ladder should be. but what if lady (un)luck just whizz by and they fell off from a slight shoving amongst the crowd? wouldn't that be a worse experience for that poor chap?

isn't the telezoom lens not that powerful enough? :dunno: btw, i've seen such pgs at malls. just turn me off:thumbsd:

I agree on the point that seeing hordes of pgs in these events are normal but these LGs staking themselves right in front of the centre stage are really too much!!! Perhaps event organizers shud do apply control over these ppl so that they do not deprive others bcos of their selfishness

Not all of them are inconsiderate though. The ones that came for SHE @ Stadium Station actually came much earlier but they stood all the way to the back. :)

it depends on their perspective, they could be trying to get level with the models though camping right in the front on ladders seems a tad excessive.

yes i'm sure there are some considerate ones around. I've seen a couple during my Chingay shoot on step ladders and they were behind the crowd with their big guns !

Hope that we do not have to get to such extend that eventually the event organiser may over-restrict the pgs.

Given the surge of interest in DSLRs and increase in no of photogs....it may come to such an extent

Maybe there will be a extend where ppls getting higher and higher ladder. :bsmilie:

Pardon my ignorance but i've seen many fashion shows on TVs and even their photogs are shooting at ground level. With their big guns they could have easily camp by the back and still get their level shots. i guess it's just being "kiasu" and inconsiderate

You don't understand them, they want to stand closer so to feel their subject. :bsmilie:
