Backpacking cam with lens attached

New to DSLR;

Not sure if backpacking the 350D cam with the rather large sigma 24mm f1.8 lens attached in the center lower compartment of crumpler formal lounge would lead to premature damage under normal handling?

Is it better to switch to manual focus during storage?

should be ok .. usually turn the camera off and leave it as AF.
