How is this kind of shot taken? Is there a backlight present?

nope there is no backlight present.

You need to have Tian He Di Li then with a stroke of luck, might be able to get it.

Look at the model hair and her right shoulder, thats where the light come from, should be direct sunlight. That means the sun is on the model back right hand side. The window glass also act as a diffuser so the sun light is not so harsh.

Also look at the model eyes, there is no catch light, that means the photographer did not use a flash or reflector. He most likely take the light reading directly from the model face, thats why you can see the model face is exposed well, but the background is over-exposed / wash-out.

it taken when the light are strong and the background has those reflective materials and the subject in the shade. Meter the face and shoot.

as I said.. you need a stroke of luck to get it. Not all the time you will be able to get it.

You are welcome.
OT: Wanna join my studio shoot in future? Besides getting a chance to shoot pretty models, you can also pick up some lights/lighting technique, keke.

looks like spotmetered on the model's face... aye who the gal?
