Hi, anyone having the same problem? I've been experiencing back pain for the past 3 years, had tried to consult with neurologist, went for physiotherapy, chinese practitioner, with no succeed :(

Thinking to go to one of these below, and need some advise or testimonial (if there is):

Really wish I could free from this pain, so I can carry DSLR around without pain. Thanks a lot for anyone who willing to share.

Have you gone to see a orthopedic surgeon? May need to take an x-ray of your back to see what is wrong.

i think your case is not a mere simple backache...actually there's no cure except to strengthen your lower back muscles through some simple yoga moves, or go gym.

orthopedic wise, can try AH, request to do a MRI scan, then you know more details.

d3vilZ, IMO, you should first consult a doctor where at least an X-ray can be done. That way, the problem will be identified.

forgot to include the fact, have done x-ray, and also MRI, the result is slipped-disc, I'm thinking other than surgery
@simon_84: thanks, but I can't even go gym, even when walking I feel pain on my back and feet :)

i got disc degeneration, don't know when i will suffer a slipped disc but my advise is to go for the surgery.

there are those that didn't not opt for the surgery, end up every morning, have to lay motionless for 5 mins due to either right or left side temporary paralysis.
same goes for those driving for long period, they too can feel numb in either side of the body.

if the pain is so serve, perhaps is better for you to go compact instead.
no point risking your body for a hobby.

How old are you and how long have you got this problem. Back recovery can take a full year, so if you are in the senior age, the recovery is even longer and osteoporosis will worsen it.

Slipped disc is complicated, depending on the degree out of position. Did your doc gave you option for wearing back braces and if the affected column can be pushed back?

Hi, almost 26 now, have suffered for more than 3 years :(
nope, they asked me to go for physiotherapy and some kind of pain killer tablets, any doctor that you can recommend? I think today it's getting worse

what kind of mattress are you using?

i use Seahorse Diamond Mattress and it works for me...try going into the various mattress showrooms and see if got improvement by lying down. Got many other brands like Tempur, King Koil and so on.

I have no knowledge on slipped disc, just that I have seen people wearing back braces to support posture, some told me was due to slipped disc (but they cannot be sure). You can consult your specialist on this matter.

Sleep therapy is useful too. While we stand for 12hrs, we do sleep 8 hours. I have cured my back pain problem by getting super hard bed from seahorse brand BUT mine was not slipped disc, just that the years of poor sleeping bed and sit posture caused by back of the chest bone to arch out. With the very hard bed, my sleep position is pretty locked, thus the bone moved back to position after 6months. But I cannot really tell you if using hard bed to lock your sleeping posture will help.

Make sure you maintain calcium in the future as weaken spinal can cause relaps as one ages.

Oh, forgotten to add. Age 26 is still good for recovery. So do make an effort to correct.

you have pain in your back and feet as the nerves are affected. since your Dr has confirmed slipped-disc, go see a physiotherapist. Physiotherapist will guide you through stretching and strengthening program to build up your back muscles.
don't expect a miracle to happen overnight. you need to have patience and committment to the stretching and exercise program.

My dad had slip disc and it was a very painful thing for him to go through. At the end, he went for an operation, and I still remember when I was young, I visited him in the hospital and he showed me the disc that was removed.

The standard of physiotherapy here is not up to standard. My sis has a doctorate in physiotherapy and teaches in one of the best physio schools in the States, and was disappointed at the standard here when she accompanied my dad for a physio session. Physiotherapist in the States have to earn a Masters and have housemanship, just like doctors.

Depending on the state of your slip disc, some physio work may help (like a traction thing to stretch the spine and help the disc slowly go back to where it suppose to), or may need to operate... it all depends on the doctor's assessment. Becareful not to go for treatment that can aggravate the problem.

Ouch... i feel the pain.. now i always been feeling aching due to mattress is quite soft.. how i wish my wife agree with harder mattress.. those Posturepedic mattress is not really gd for me... =(

Orthopaedics AND Chiropractors are your best friends. A combination of both resolves your problem faster than you got it.

have u seen an orthopeadic surgeon in any case? it sounded like you have not seen the right guy. yes neurologist for nerve pain...MRI yes...but back pain is ortho's specialty...please see an ortho guy first...don't go chiro straight. you are so young to have such severe backache. PM me if u need referral. i see i can pass u some contacts or not.......

Physio is always prefer as a first line non-invasive treatment...but in severe case u have no choice but to Op esp if it compromise your daily routine. medication is adjunct. you can't be on arcoxia etc for life...it is very bad for your gastric ....see the right person and do the right thing....

wonder why there is a jump to a neurologist when the problem is with your back?

maybe you have forgotten to provide some info. Nevertheless, allow me to share my personal experiences.

The pain you are experiencing is due to the fact that the disc is impinging on your nerve. The nature of it is purely mechanical - something hits your nerve and you felt a sensation, simple as that. The only possible remedy is to undergo a surgery to remove the part of the disc that is impinging on your nerve.

Back surgery have a substantial risk and therefore, in circumstances whereby the pain is manageable (does not affect task like passing motion etc) and tolerable (does not affect daily routine) often, it is discourage. Since you have an MRI, you can request with your orthopedic specialist that you would like to seek the opinion of a spine surgeon whether corrective surgery will be able to get ride of the pain you are going through now.

Personally, I have slip disc at multiple locations on my spine. On top of that, I have moderate degenerative disc on the lower portion of my spine as well. Physio does help to a certain extend. However, the biggest impact is correcting my posture. I have to say, it takes great discipline to correct that. Imagine a good 20 over years of poor posture and having to correct it now. You need a strong back to have a good posture and a good posture results in a strong back and that translate to less strain on the disc.

My personal condition has improved over time as I constantly remind myself the need to have a proper posture. And those back exercises does indeed strengthen my back to a certain extend.

To TS..

I'm also having backache all these while.. For me, I use laptop everyday and long hours in front of the laptop.

My position not that good as my height is not suitable for the tables and chair in school.
That's why most of the time, I ended up slouching to see the screen.

Sorry to say this but..
It's called "occupational disease" if your situation is similar to mine. :(

hi imac, thanks, I've just went to the physiotherapist, I think I'll just go for the treatment a while and see how's the result

not really, I do consult a general practitioner actually, and from my symptoms, she refers me to a neurologist, yes I do know the risk of back surgery, that's why I am avoiding it. I've just got back from physiotherapy, hope will get better soon by doing the exercise.

Thanks a lot for all :)

Sorry to hear about your back pain, just wanted to give some advice to you.
2 possible scenerios

1) the disc is actually on impinging on the nerve roots. Consider nerve block or surgery esp if you have tried all conservative means. The recovery from surgery is not as long as you think esp if you work hard. I personally know someone who went on to compete in a major sporting event 2 months post op but i must STRESSED that proper rehabilitation is essential.

2) the protusion is causing an inflammatory process which is irritating the nerve: Caused by poor posture, overweight, weak abdominal muscles, poor activation pattern of abdominal muscles.

Any good physios should be able to help u with the 2nd scenerios. Let me know if you need any recommendations.
