Hi, I'm new to the forum, and I'm currently doing my research for my first DSLR. I've been eyeing the K100D, but I've heard that it might be difficult to find lenses and accessories in Singapore. Just wondering if the Pentax community here can tell me how true or false this is.

I've taken a look at the Pentax pricelist megathread, and I do see that many items still don't have their prices listed. Is that because the shops here don't carry them? I'm not expecting the same kind of range and availability as Canon and Nikon, but I would still like to have some sort of browsing option while shopping in Singapore.

Also wondering if service (for things like repair and cleaning) by Shriro is good.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Oh, since I'm just starting out, I don't really know either.... I plan to stick with the kit lens for a while, then add on as I feel the need. I can foresee probably a flash unit, some sort of 55-200mm (around) lens, and a 50mm prime lens for macros. For now I'd say nothing too expensive, 3rd party would probably be fine.... It's just a matter of knowing that there'll be options out there, rather than having to order everything from the web or relying solely on a single retailer.

Well I just saw a few pentax 50-200mm, few pentax 360 flash and a 50mm macro sigma at OP. Just came back from there.:) Not that hard.

Oh if you need a wired remote, you can use the canon remote, or a third party remote!

I just came back from OP too! Saw the same items, and they were selling the K100D with kit lens for an amazing $860 with GST! But as I learnt from reading other threads about OP, they only give shop warranty... very attractive price nonetheless.

Which reminds me, anyone has anything good or bad to say about Shriro service?

But now that I've taken a trip around Funan and Simlim, I can understand how it would be more prudent to go with Canon or Nikon if I might want to consider less common type of lenses in future, the shelves are completely packed with them, while lenses for Pentax and Olympus only get a poor little corner compared to them.... Still feeling quite torn.... really like the K100D body though (vs. Canon 400D).

Servicing by Shriro is fine. The service center itself is small and cosy, with many many lenses for you to play around with. Its definately smaller than those of olympus and canon (i've not been to the nikon one), but well it works fine.

I think unless you are looking for highly specialised lenses (super-wide or super-tele), Pentax (+Sigma) has almost everything you will require.

cheers

Hi
You are suffering the same problem as many others. You are vegetarian but its not so critical that the stall have a few great vegetarian dishes but more important for the stall to sell lots of other types of food you will never eat.
For lenses, unless you have some very special needs, basically you need the kit lens range, 2 or 3 priimes and perhaps a long zoom. Pentax/Compatibles can definitely meet this need.
Your choice should be based on features of the camera, price, value for money...
Just hope you make a correct decision for the right reasons....if in the end you prefer to handling or design of the C or N, so be it....
Have fun!

I too was in the same position as you are three weeks back, but still stuck with k100d and got it finally, the people here in the forum are quite helpful. Do you have any idea what you are looking for in an SLR and which types of shots you would want to capture?

Thanks everyone for the useful replies! I've been talking to some friends, and they're encouraging me to go with the feel and get the K100D too!

Haha, I like the food analogy....

Frankly I don't have very clear ideas yet about which types of shots I'd like to capture, but I do know that I'm finding my compact restrictive in many ways (eg. very clumsy to change shutter or aperture, very limited aperture range, cannot handle night shots well, etc), and I think I feel confident enough to skip the prosumer stage. Hoping in general that I can improve my skills and get nicer pictures!

Anyway, so how is it having a newly acquired K100D? No regrets I hope? What were the other bodies that you were considering?

I can recommend the K100D. I bought my Pentax film cameras before i decided to buy some Canon gear, so i had a decent collection of lenses. I did a lot of research on Dsl'r before i bought a Pentax, i think it was the price and the features that won me over. For a First
Dlsr i think its a ripper. I could of easly bought a Canon but the cheapest was another $300-400 dearer than the Pentax. And of course the SR built in to the Pentax, you have to buy expensive VR type lenses to get this in Canon/Nikon Ect.

Regards

Blair

John 3:16 in funan has some pentax lenses too, and can help you source more.

Thanks everyone! I think I'm quite set, will be getting the K100D. :) Maybe this weekend... or Vesak Day.... Just hope OP has one in stock!

A bit of a sidetrack, does anyone know if OP sells dry boxes at a good price too? And also compacts? Thinking of getting an Ixus 70 at the same time, maybe can strike a package deal bargain for an even better price... ;)

Their compact cameras aren't cheaper than distributor sets and they're still grey imports ie. no local warranty except through the shop and they'll have to ship it back to CN or HK to get it serviced, then back again. This will take at least a month.

Also if you get the K100D from OP, Shriro won't service FOC under warranty as it wasn't duly imported by them.

Got my K100D! Feels nice in my hands... :)

Thanks again to all here!

Hope to hear from you again when I have some time to take some decent pictures and put them up for comments.
