i'm using a sony 717 for a few weeks now and i notice something i don't quite get get.

When i set my ISO to auto mode, the camera selects the lowest ISO 100 no matter what the environment. I was wondering if auto setting suppose to means that the camera gets abit smarter and use higher ISO settings in dark environments.

Logically, full Auto mode should result in the camera increasing the ISO when the max achievable shutter speed is insufficient for a handheld shot at the current ISO.

Is you shutter speed still 1/focal length or greater?

yupz. i've tried in very dark areas where my shutter speed is above 1 sec and my auto ISO setting is still 100.
