Are there any f1.8/f2 lenses which are on par with f1.4 variant (e-mount)?

I'm looking to buy Sony A7iii. Obviously the f1.4 lenses are the cream of the crop. But are there any particular f1.8 and/or f2 lenses which give equally good (and sharp) optics as the f1.4 variant?

Do let me know what are the other shortfalls as well. Thanks!

I think it is difficult to generalise — there are lots of different f1.8/f2 lenses out there, as well as many f1.4 lenses. It is not true that f1.8 lenses are inherently less good/sharp compared to the f1.4 versions. The design parameters are different, and it is up to the manufacturer how “good” they want to make the lens to be.

For eg, I have the Sony FE 55mm f1.8 and use it on the A7R2 — I have no issues at all with the sharpness of the lens even wide open, at at 100% view.

FWIW, here’s a comparison of the FE55mm with the FE50mm f1.4:

I think the 85 f1.8 is really almost on par with the 85 GM. At $600+ a pop, compared to $2k+, it’s a no brainer.

For the 50mm range, I’ve owned the 50 f1.4, sigma f1.4 and the 55. I personally feel the creaminess of the bokeh is superior on the 50, as compared to the 55, or even the sigma 50 f1.4 (which I feel is very sharp but doesn’t have that bokeh characteristics).

But I really can’t tell much difference on the 85. But that’s my opinion.

money no objective to you GM 24mm f1.4 and FE 90mm f2.8 macro to go. Sorry I not very into zoom but these 2 are my go to lens at sentosa
