Im looking to build a music room and am looking for a good speaker system.

for music.. better get something else. For the same price u pay in bose system u can get much better deal putting up everything together
Sound is very personal and you can experience it at Atlas Hifi in PS.......I have a Marantz + Missions + Mordaunt Shot combo.....and I don't mind to trade them with a Bose lifestyle series if I can afford to because of their compactness and sound quality :thumbsup:

For music, i think Bose are not a very good choice. They're better at movies. They're worth a look if you want stylo milo and to play movies. The compactness is a plus. The higher end ones can even disappear behind your furniture. Dunno what adaptQ technology.
For entry level, you can try some of the systems suggested.
Missions are strong in bass. Marantz CD players are famous for their quality. Amps you can try Rotel and NAD etc. Remember to save some money for your interconnects and speaker cables. Dun use cheap free wires. Then there is the rack and speaker stands. (Unless you buy floorstanders.)

like selling a Sigma 18-50 f3.5-5.6 for the price of a 17-40L.

Amp - Harmon kardon prices dropped quite significantly but i not sure if they are still good. Yahama is good choice, be it music or movie. Denon is pretty good amp for movie as well.
Speakers - even more personal, as depends on type of music, design etc. there's Jamo, Monitor Audio

Thanks for all the input guys. Im looking at a budget of about $1500 for the speakers and amp (and possible cd player).

Would highly recommend Cambridge Audio amplifiers, Marantz CD Players. Speakers depend on size of room and music you are into.

I dont know what kind of space you have but if i had 1,500 to spend, I'd buy a pair of Norh 4.0 and a Norh SE9 from www.norh.com .
I have heard the speakers and the amplifier, beautiful smooth rendition, a little laid back but good for jazz.
the 'standard' budget setup in Singapore would be a pair of Acoustic Energy AE1s/mission 7series and a cambridge/NAD amp. which will set you back by about 1k.
for a cd player, you can buy a cheap nad or marantz. . or just use yoru dvd player/ipod first.

Also check out a shop in Adelphi that has some gorgeous Monitor Audio speakers, in a rosewood finish with gold tweeters. They are specifically designed to be used close to a wall so good for small room set ups. These speakers really sing!! Not great if you are a bass-head but good for jazz, classical etc..
