Im looking to build a music room and am looking for a good speaker system.
Moderate budget.

Just to get some feedback.
Any alternatives?

You pay good money for a fabulous looking system abeit a average sounding one. You decide! :)

BOSE - Better Of Spending on somethingElse ... :D

Personally, an entry level NAD or Rotel integrated amplifier coupled with a pair of studio monitors or Acoustic Energy bookshelves would be good. CD player? Marantz CDP would be a good choice.

well, the sentiments so far speaks so much for Bose!

When you say "a good speaker system" do you mean a stereo speaker system or a surround system? What do you intend to use it for? Music or home theater?

i like their remote control only. :)

Kinda over priced system, surrond sound is good though

im intending it for music, not so much movies.
ok.. so no Bose then... any suggestions?

Go drop by Adelphi and audition a couple of system. One good place to start is KEC. Friendly service. Use your ear to decide. Everyone has different liking to music. Bring along your favourite piece of music to audition. You might want to check out forums at www.echoloft.com

for music.. better get something else. For the same price u pay in bose system u can get much better deal putting up everything together

Sound is very personal and you can experience it at Atlas Hifi in PS.......I have a Marantz + Missions + Mordaunt Shot combo.....and I don't mind to trade them with a Bose lifestyle series if I can afford to because of their compactness and sound quality

For music, i think Bose are not a very good choice. They're better at movies. They're worth a look if you want stylo milo and to play movies. The compactness is a plus. The higher end ones can even disappear behind your furniture. Dunno what adaptQ technology.

For entry level, you can try some of the systems suggested.
Missions are strong in bass. Marantz CD players are famous for their quality. Amps you can try Rotel and NAD etc. Remember to save some money for your interconnects and speaker cables. Dun use cheap free wires. Then there is the rack and speaker stands. (Unless you buy floorstanders.)

REMEMBER: Its YOU and YOUR ears that decide, NOT us and our suggestions. :)

ooo . . Bose.

will summarize my own opinion: crap sound, cheap build, WAYYY Overpriced,

like selling a Sigma 18-50 f3.5-5.6 for the price of a 17-40L.

and in case youre thinking im exeggerating.. the ratio aint that far off :)

think Ill just let you read :)

ESPECIALLY the first 2 :)

if you wanna put together a system why not give us a budget and maybe we could give you a few more options :) I am SURE that whatever you spend on Bose I can do way better with seperates.

pm me or do it on thread..

Lifestyle system, never audiophile grade.

For music, a lot of it depends on personal choice. ie what type of music you play, jazz, rock etc?

Speakers and amp is the most important component. I would rank amp 1st and speaker 2nd.

Amp - Harmon kardon prices dropped quite significantly but i not sure if they are still good. Yahama is good choice, be it music or movie. Denon is pretty good amp for movie as well.

Speakers - even more personal, as depends on type of music, design etc. there's Jamo, Monitor Audio

Thanks for all the input guys. Im looking at a budget of about $1500 for the speakers and amp (and possible cd player).

Would highly recommend Cambridge Audio amplifiers, Marantz CD Players. Speakers depend on size of room and music you are into.

One more thing, im very much into jazz and bossa.

Jazz and bossa nova ?

my kinda music.

You might wanna listen to tube amplifiers.

I dont know what kind of space you have but if i had 1,500 to spend, I'd buy a pair of Norh 4.0 and a Norh SE9 from www.norh.com .

I have heard the speakers and the amplifier, beautiful smooth rendition, a little laid back but good for jazz.

the 'standard' budget setup in Singapore would be a pair of Acoustic Energy AE1s/mission 7series and a cambridge/NAD amp. which will set you back by about 1k.

for a cd player, you can buy a cheap nad or marantz. . or just use yoru dvd player/ipod first.

if you will consider used, right now theres some stuff on www.echoloft.com

like
mission 780 speakers
http://www.echoloft.com/cgi-bin/buysell/YaBB.cgi?board=hifi&action=display&num=1110209101
and
densen beat integrated amp
http://www.echoloft.com/cgi-bin/buysell/YaBB.cgi?board=hifi&action=display&num=1110201489
and
a coupla cd players
http://www.echoloft.com/cgi-bin/buysell/YaBB.cgi?board=hifi&action=display&num=1110027289
and
http://www.echoloft.com/cgi-bin/buysell/YaBB.cgi?board=hifi&action=display&num=1110026278

but if it were me :) I would go for teh Norh's teh sound is glorious. and teh pricing is good. the prices quoted are to US. so it you order from SIngapore, it can be cheaper:) in fact.. you could take a train/fly to bangkok and collect em yourself... cheaper still!

sorry for teh long post... feel free to ask more questions

Also check out a shop in Adelphi that has some gorgeous Monitor Audio speakers, in a rosewood finish with gold tweeters. They are specifically designed to be used close to a wall so good for small room set ups. These speakers really sing!! Not great if you are a bass-head but good for jazz, classical etc..
