Apple Computer has been in talks that could lead to a decision soon to use Intel chips in its Macintosh line, according to a report published Monday.

The Wall Street Journal, citing two industry executives with knowledge of recent discussions between the companies, reported that Apple will agree to use Intel chips.

Neither company would confirm the report, and an Apple representative told the Journal that the information should be characterized as "rumor and speculation."

It was unclear whether such a move would signal a large-scale shift away from chips made by IBM, Apple's longtime supplier, the article said.

Apple could choose to add some Intel-based models to its product line or make a complete shift to Intel's chip technology in what would be seen as a serious blow to IBM's chip business, the newspaper said.

Although Apple has never offered Intel chips inside its consumer-oriented computers, it does so in one of its other products--the Xserve RAID storage system.

Adopting Intel chips more broadly would help ensure that future Macintosh systems could meet the price and performance of products from tough rivals such as Dell.

Apple's pricing, which has often been higher than rivals, could become more competitive if Intel provides the kind of marketing subsidies it has given to other computer makers, the newspaper said.

Apple sells about 3 million computers a year--a small portion of the estimated 200 million sold globally.

But for Intel, winning over Apple would be a prestigious endorsement from one of technology's most influential trendsetters and could associate the chipmaker with Apple's hugely popular iPod music player.

Apple's shares have nearly quadrupled since the iPod was introduced in October 2001.

As recently as February, Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer reiterated that Apple has no plans to offer Mac OS X on anything other than the kinds of chips it currently uses.

Apple to use Intel processors when the G5 series from IBM is doing so well in terms of performance and scalability? So much so that that M$ has to give up Intel for a powerpc processor in their XBOX360 and PS3 also use a triple core variant of the G5?

Yah right, and pigs can fly. :bsmilie:

If they do that they will be moving backwards.

remember that in search for higher performance, M$ has to live with the embarassment of using the dual powermac G5s as a development platform for their XBOX360 which is also based on a variant of the G5.

so that story posted has zero credibility.

in fact, i won't be surprised if one day, M$ release a powerpc version of their windows OS! in fact that is what powers the XBOX360 anyway.

they have done that before. i have used winnt 4 on a motorola powerpc box before. everything looks the same as nt4 on intel. eventually died off, presumably thru lack of demand.

Why not? We don't see M$ using PowerPC for its OS if it is that good.

You mean that the Apple Xserve RAID storage system is backwards lor?

Who really cares? It will only be interesting news if OSX is released to run on your typical PC system.

Of course! Why else do you think I care, that's the potential!

Darwin already does.

Ohh, you want the cuteso GUI don't you :)

I suspect Apple releasing it for 'WinTel' platforms is extrememly unlikely. Apple are not in the software businesses as such. They are a hardware maker who just happen to do their own OS to match.

Their OS runs on their own machine over which they have total control of the hardware configuration.

To run OSX on WinTel they would then have to QA and support a zillion hardware combinations, rather doubt they want to go there.

As for switching CPU chips, there were serious rumours that they would go AMD64 for a while when the G4's were getting a bit long in the tooth and the G5 hadn't appeared.

Motorola were not interested in the desktop market, they sell far more Power PC chips into the embeded market than to Apple. There is an ongoing joke that they have sold more power PC's to Detriot (For automotive ignition systems) than they have sold to Apple. The money is in embeded. Cars don't need blindingly fast 64 bit CPUs (Yet :)

Same with IBM. Their primary powerPC chip production is embeded systems. I've got a Satelite Set Top Box who's primary chip is a huge IBM PPC chip. (Which also has a DVB decoder and MPEG decoder 'on die').
The G5 is a cutdown 'Power4' CPU that IBM built to run AS400s.
Again for IBM the money is in embeded systems and their mid range servers. The desktop market is too competive.
