Well D40 is about the cheapest DSLR I can afford right now (the smallest and cheapest DSLR I know of) and I also looking for a wide angle lens and the sigma 10-20mm seems to best wide angle lens I can try.
So far have not seen any sample photos of this two combination. Has anyone tried this two (rare) combination before? Thanks.

if you are not comparing the performance of two different lenses on the same body, you shouldn't confine your search to d40 only. Any sigma 10-20mm photo/review on the www should be able to help you decide whether to go for it or not.

I had and it works just fine and most importantly it AF.

I attached here a preview how it looks like with the Sigma10-20mm HSM

if its the HSM variant, then it will work on the D40 (Auto focus) but i'd suggest you check the review of the lens. a $2000 lens with a great review will work very well either with a D40 or a D200 but it really depends on what you are looking for in either the body or the lens and vice versa

I use my Sigma 10-20mm with EOS 400D..... work without problem. ;)
