Anyone switched from Windows to Mac?

opposite from u, all the computer I built uses MSI mainboards. Never gave me any trouble before. The current 1 i'm using now is also MSI, been running it 24/7 since June 2002. RAM wise, however, i never put 4 sticks before, at most 3.

WinXP, very stable. I don't have to restart unless after installing some system apps. Agree that computers are not for computer dummies.

Wanted to switch to a mac some 3 years back.. Problem: They don't wanna customize my mac for me locally.. Wanted a dual G4, 2GB of ram and an ATTO SCSI RAID controller w/ Cheetahs in RAID 10.. buggers just gave up a chance to sell off a 5-digit system.. Oh well.. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing to remain on PC afterall... Still got my SCSI and play games...

I just finished reinstalling my windows xp and my PC seems to be in great condition again.
Have cleared up all those trial software I have tried in the past one year.
Love my PC again now.

u got install a firewall and followed by all the security patch, service pack?

else u will see funny pop up start appearing, torjan and spyware are so smart that it can sneak thru all those security holes and infect your computer even when you dont surf net!

There was once when i reinstalled the OS and kenna lots of torjan within 5 minutes...it was so fast that I dont even have time to download security patches. in the end i got to plug out the network cable and install a firewall and anti-virus before I can go online safely to download the patches :angry:

At last, there are so many ppl here who have use both system & understand the Windows is still good...
Not that I like M$, but its not fair that people always bash Windows for being crappy when all they do is load it with all sorts of free adware/3rd party programs.

Win XP + SP2 is the best windows to date...For those who are paranoid about viruses & spywarez...SP2 is a must. My system doesn't even have anti virus (theyr'e crap that bog down ur system), only my router firewall is between me & the rest of the world... :sweat:

Talking about stability, I overclock my P4 1.8Ghz to 2.9Ghz & throw in all sorts of theme programs such as Konfabulator, Avedesk, Object bar, it is still kicking hard & left running for days without crashing.

I use PowerMac G5 at office everyday, so I use it more than my PC...i can tell u its not as fantastic as those Mac fanboys (sorry) claim. It freezes & crashes as frequent as well. Kernel panic & the dreaded Spinning Beach Ball of Death is a familiar sight if ur give it a lot of pressure. Maybe I got a lemon instead of apple?... :dunno:

Mac is good for its stabilty, lack of spyware/virus & ease of use. Just love its drag & drop program installation. :thumbsup:
But the OS X interface is nothing sorts of amazing anymore since Windows XP can do it much better thx to the support of the whole open source community.

Windows PC is good for enthusiasts who enjoys PC gaming & customizing their hardware. And the cost of upgrading is relatively cheap compare to Mac. Just drop few hundred bucks & ur system is refreshed for another 12 months again. For Mac, u gotta shell out thousands to upgrade the whole system..But good thing is, Mac users usually use their system for years without upgrading.

did i mention that I have NOT even started surf net after the fresh install? :dunno:

the first thing i did after a fresh install was to download security patches, but already got infected before the download is complete.

in the end got to plug out the network cable and download firewall + scanner

I am not sure if I am willing to be that blase about not using anti-virus software these days. Two years ago, yes. (I was running my system then like you) Today? No. There too many trojans and other phishing malware that comes through email these days for my comfort. My anti-virus app helps kill them on download. And I don't even use the hacker's favorite email app, Outlook.

It's entirely true that all anti-virus apps slow down your system to varying extent, but having a zombified computer or worse, having the possibility of letting some idiot install a keylogger or remote control app on my computer without being alerted to them would be too much risk to bear these days.

I think the trick is to use an anti-virus app that doesn't suck up too much resources, and for my own application, I find the free app, Anti-Vir (http://www.free-av.com), rather good. Their updates are very regular and the current version has ironed out all the usability bugs from the one of 12 months ago. Have tried almost everything else free and commercial and have come back to this one.

Does my system slow down a lot? Nope. It's slows down a little, but I have a little more peace of mind. What I would NOT recommend are dodgy McAfee or Symantec antivirus apps. These ones are bloated and are way too invasive in their installation and application. They slow down the PC far too much for my liking.

I'd also suggest installing Zonealarm, Spybot Search and Destroy (which has a very useful optional utility called Teatimer that detects registry changes), and Ad-Aware. I run the latter two every now and then.

I install Zonealarm so I can be alerted to malware that "phone home".

Most local Mac dealers are crap. They just want to sell the standard configs. Which is quite dumb if you ask me since they are competing against Apple itself. They might have some more competitive advantage if they are more willing to do customizations for you. Though possibly, they don't think it's worth the trouble since the margins are not sufficiently attractive.

Then again, most Mac buyers just want a boring standard configuration anyway. More RAM is as 'custom' as they want ;-) :bsmilie:

How can you have trojans in a fresh legitimate installation of Windows XP? Malware and trojans don't exactly waltz in by themselves.

Do not just reinstall the OS if you suspect of virus or spyware. Do a clean wipe, using the old method of FDISK your hardrive by DOS, then reformat the entire hardisk, THEN install the OS! That will be complete cleaning. :thumbsup:

I've been told by a friend whose brother sells Macs that the margins for selling Macs are better than selling PCs.

How can you have trojans in a fresh legitimate installation of Windows XP? Malware and trojans don't exactly waltz in by themselves.

that's why i say they are so smart now, you dont need to visit any of those website, as long as there are security hole that are not patched, they will attack and enter the system

what happen is after Windows setup was completed, I connect the PC to the net and click on windows update. Internet explorer was launched and a list of patches available was displayed.

I selected all the patches and while they were downloading half way, suddenly some funny files appear in C:\, I checked the task manager and confirmed that there were some funny processes running and hogging the CPU resource. it made the downloading of the patches even slower...the system started to slow down until explorer crashed. i tried to disconnect the network and restart the computer, but everything seems to freeze except the mouse pointer, that's why i got to plug out the network cable and push the reset button

this is the second time this had happend on two differnet system at two different locations...both are using fresh new hard disk.

Very unlikely that a virus or hacker can just attack without any interconnection. Perhaps your copy of windows got problem itself?? :think:

hmmm ... I did connect to internet to download those patches and sp2 after the installation before I installed the firewall. Hopefully, it's still fine now. :-(

Software? Look for alternatives.
Parts? Check em up urself.
Stripping a Mac? No sweat, it gives me the extra challenge and satisfaction and I strip a Mac faster den I can strip a PC now.

I'm not sure what line u are in, but Trojans and Malwares DO waltz in by themselves despite the popular belief.
