Better to stop halfway at Shanghai/Beijing.

Very very cold. Honestly very cold. Must wear a lot of clothes. A few minutes outside and you might want to go back inside already.

As to hotel wise: any hotels will do. There's a hotel beside the main attraction but forgot name already. Must be ready to pay $$$ as well.

Yes, it is cold and if that is the main reason why you are going, get yourself well equipped. Not only clothes but shoes, head gear and gloves. Good luck.
