Need some help here
My wife's relative from Taiwan coming to Singapore this weekend & staying @ Raffles Hotel:sweat:
Anyone got any sugguestion for any good & not so expensive(below $50 per person cos they got 7 person & I'm not so rich ;p) restaurant for dining in sg?
As I know Taiwan already got lot's of good food and most of them taste even better than sg, so very hard to find a suitable restaurant for them.

Taiwanese food are nice but some are not really suit sg locals taste. Similarly for them, some of our local delicacies may not necessary taste nice to them.

I have a few taiwanese frens who live in sg and some of the restaurants that they mentioned had food that they extremely loved are:

1. Sakura International Buffet Restaurant (Jurong East Branch or Yio Chu Kang Stadium Branch serves the best although same food.)

2. No Signboard at Geylang. If u wan to have better and cleaner environment, Vivo branch is airconditioned.

3. Marina Mandarin Aqua Marine for international buffet / Marina Mandarin Peach Blossoms for Chinese dining.

There are definitely more choices around but these are some of those that they felt that the food are good.

U can bring them to eat these food that are very local but not common in Taiwan, unless u want to show up (pardon me) and bring them to expensive and cosy restaurants, but bear in mind Taiwan also got many expensive and cosy Chinese and Western restaurants.
海南鸡饭 (Hainanese Chicken Rice)
王亚细肉骨茶 (Bak Ku Teh)
辣椒蟹 (Chilli Carb)
咖哩魚頭 (Curry Fish Head)

i personally think you should bring them to eat food that are unique to singapore. why spend money and bring them to fancy restaurants when such cuisines can be found at their own country?

if they are not fussy, you should bring them to makan places where most of us would probably dine in... e.g., kopitiams and hawker centres. let them experience the joy of dining singapore style.

as suggested by Astin... i think these should be a great start.

Actually last time when I went to Taiwan, they are very good to me & treat us to many restaurant(some of them very expensive somemore) and bring us to many places.
So this time very paisei, die die must treat them at least one good meal to repay for their kindness:).
Already thinking of bringing them to Lau Ba Sa to eat satay, stringray & stuff for one day but still thinking of treating them good meal @ restaurant.

Thanks to kuantoh, will consider No Signboard at Vivocity:D

My suggestions

Classy and not so ex.

1) Crystal Jade at Vivo. Interior decor is nice, they have and you can request for a private room. Honestly the interior decor and the entrance gives you a wow factor and helps you if u want to impress. However regarding the food there are mixed reviews.

Local Delights

2) The East Coast branches of Jumbo, Long Beach etc for crab and seafood.

3) East Coast Hawker Centre for local delights and you can do your satay trip there.
http://ieatishootipost.sg/search/label/9 East Coast Lagoon Food Village
Advantages:
By the sea and cooling, alot of foreigners I bring there are very amazed by the place.
Lots of good food and being a place for locals, no dirty tricks.

Disadvantages:
Hard to get there if you don't have a car

I would not advise you to bring them to Lau Pat Sat. The touting there is horrible and sometimes you encounter incidents in which the satay stall owner tell you to bugger off cos you are not ordering from him hence you cannot sit on "his" seats. Seems that although officially it is not allowed, the satay stall owners reserve the rights to certain sections, so u must order from them if you sit near their stall.

The 2 stalls that sell bbq seafood serves lousy seafood... I once had a whole plate of clam shells served to me.... yes shells and no meat.. So I brought it back to the stall and guess what.... they didn't even ask me anything and told the cook to give me another portion. That is when I saw him give me a portion from a big pot of pre cooked sambal clams.

Hi TS

IMO:

No signboard is over-rated, but the branch in Geylang is a little better. They may like visiting the seedier side of SG, and you can bring them to the Hor Fun noodles and other food there...

I would suggest
Sammy's Curry or Long Beach at Dempsey - both pretty unique tastes of local food
UDMC restuarants for crabs, esp since East Coast is pretty famous
If you like Crabs, I prefer the Jumbo branch in Serangoon.
For a taste of Hainanese steaks and good Chicken rice, Serangoon gardens offers a steak house and chicken rice store within 30m and Chomp Chomp offers a unique SG experience.

For Satay, Yusof's at AMK hawker centre in the central is good, and again the hawker centre offers them a new expereince.

Ampang Yong Tau Foo at Sembawang outside Nee Soon Camp is nice too

Ask your wife if they want style and ambience or good local food and a culinary experience.

Cheers

You're the first person I've met who prefers Jumbo over No Signboard.

Well, technically I haven't met you, but you know what I mean.

I beg to differ. Zhou's kitchen's portion are miserable.... I had dinner there with my parents and their portions looked like it was meant for 1 person... We had to eat a second dinner after that.
