You are smart. Because if the item affixed on it is too heavy, it can rip off the hotshoe and the top cover of the camera prism.

For heavy items I've made a small wooden box bottom for DSLR and top for video camera. I put a small ball head for the top so that both cameras pointing to the same spot.

Video camera is just for video feed for my DSLR to shoot HD time lapse movies.
