Hi, I live, breathe, eat and sleep fashion and I plan to open up my own modeling agency in a few years.

I would like to take up fashion photography and I would like advice as to where I can apply for a course.

I only want high fashion photography and am not interested in snapping pics of girls at computer fairs and all things sleazy. I only want the very best and hope I will get a good recommendation for a course or a mentor I can learn from.

Cheers!

Write to them, see if you can get internship. Of course, you will need to be quite experienced and already have some kind of portfolio ready first.

I will be taking up a Fashion Photography course at the Photographic Society of Singapore, but it'll be pretty basic stuff for beginners like me.

Good luck.

Thank you so much!!

My gosh Wee Khim is BRILLIANT!!

Not a problem.

But erm, you "live, breathe, eat and sleep fashion", and you don't know who Wee Khim is?

I know of him. I just don't know he offers courses to teach editorial shoots as Im really not into snapping pics of FHM/Maxim/Race Queen types. I can find a mentor to teach me to shoot girls at computer shows easily, but finding a mentor who specialises in editorial/high fashion shoots are rare. I also heard of Chuan Do and other fashion photographers, just that I need to know who offers courses.

Anyway thanks so much for yr help. Really appreciate it. I just emailed Wee Khim, hope he responds.

Oh, these photographers do not offer courses as far as I know. The best photographers in their respective fields rarely do so because of their tight schedule, and because time is money, many of them will find conducting courses "a waste of time". The only time they'd consider teaching could the the off-season, like the 7th lunar month on the Chinese calendar for wedding photographers. Not sure if there's such a case for the fashion industry.

I thought of WK because since you asked to learn from the best, I assume that you are already quite proficient and established and are seeking to push yourself even further. So, it's not really going to be a course, per se, but an application for internship.

IMO, it's not that easy to "learn from the very best" in Sg, unless you show some exceptional talent, and/or got personal connections. (Kind of like the old adage that "those who can, do. Those who can't, teach".) For mass-market courses, they're mainly aimed at giving you the foundations of that respective field of photography; it won't be the cutting edge stuff.

But no harm trying. Since you know top-name fashion photographers in Sg, just write to them, send in your portfolio and resume/CV first. Maybe you'll get your lucky break.

u'll be takin the fashion course at PSS? me too! I signed up for it like 1 mth ago but kept getting postponed because of the slow response. Hope the 18th may intake is on man.

Yeah, I went down to PSS last Wednesday afternoon and took a look at the list. I think there were like 6 or 7 names, but only 2 people paid up (I'm one of them). They say need maybe another 2 or 3 more then they can start class.

wah then i must be the other one who paid already. damn if they dun start the course soon, i'm gona ask for a refund cos this course was supposed to start in april or something like that.

find a chance to be a photographic assistant to those fashion photogs... learn as you assist their assistants (you would start as 2nd or 3rd assistant if you don't have experience)...

i'm also interested in applying for an internship (or something of that nature.. basically working or helping out and learning in the process) with an established photographer of any kind (fashion, wedding, interior, portraiture, etc). do you guys know which photographers/companies might be willing to take me under their wing? oh, and i'm not a totally new to photography (to certain types, yes: eg, i'm unfamiliar with studio lighting); some of my photos can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sehnsucht
