An accident occurred at the Kallang/Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) worksite this morning, resulting in three explosions and a small fire. No one was injured and the public was also not affected. The worksite and its structures remain intact.

At about 9.50am, seven workers were dismantling metal struts at the 4th level of the tunnel, located below Paya Lebar Road and Airport Road junction. The struts were being removed as casting of the base slab of the tunnels has been completed.

In the process of lifting the strut, the strut knocked into six gas cylinders nearby and they toppled. This caused one of the cylinders
to catch fire. The emergency alarm was immediately sounded and the workers were evacuated within eight minutes. Two cylinders exploded a few minutes later and the third cylinder exploded forty-five minutes later. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived at about 10.00am to put out the fire and to manage the situation at site.

No one was injured. There was also no damage to the structures at the worksite. The Land Transport Authority (LTA), SCDF, the Police and the Ministry of Manpower are investigating into the cause of the accident.

LTA views the incident seriously. "We regret that the accident took place and we would like to apologise to the public for the alarm caused. Fortunately, no one was hurt. We will work with the contractor to tighten work procedures to ensure similar incidents do not recur," says Rajan Krishnan, Director Project of the Land Transport Authority.

The accident had occurred at Contract 423, a 2.96 km of tunnels from the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) to Ubi Road 2. Contract 423 was awarded to Samsung Corporation (Engineering & Construction Group) and is one of the six major civil contracts for the KPE.
