The worst case scenario happened. I dunno wat happened to my portable HDD. all my photos were gone in that particular folder, just that folder. i dunno why... someone got a solution? i tried Recuva but to no avail...

Did you try the Recuva deep scan? That usually finds stuff. Don't perform any copy/del operations anymore in the drive. If Recuva doesn't help, some other commercial program might help if you could find one. Could the pics have been moved to some other folder accidentally?

virus could not have just attacked that folder...
doing the deep scan now, hope i'm safe... :(

Suggest you backup the rest of the pictures; it can also be an indication of a failing hard disk.

okay, recuva found nothing after deep scan.

i'm screwed.

That's why the number 1 solution is to always backup your photos. I have a total of 3 backups in case anything goes wrong to either of them and i still have my pics.

But what u're experiencing may be known as 'data leaking' in which some data in a certain location suddenly disappears which is quite common, therefore backing up is the best solution.

If u have any data rescue or recovery programs such as Sandisk's RescuePro software which are bundled with their higher end memory products, u can use it to recover back lost data. Depending on your HDD size or the medium capacity, it may take quite a while for the scanning.

Hope this helps.

one only knows the importance of backing up data once it is too late
i too have lost data and now i back up to 3 different places one on hdd and 2 sets of DVD

The last time it happen to me is that I accidently MOVE the whole folder into another folder (all thanks to the faulty mouse), hence couldn't find it. Plug the harddisk in the PC and do a search on whole harddisk (even possible on the PC you ever connected to) for your photos ext. Like *.NEF, *.Jpg or *.TIFF..... see if there is anything still around.

Get Data Recovery Wizard - probably the best disk recovery tool out there. So far it has recovered 3 of my disks, one was partitioned wrongly, it became a "RAW" format and Windows couldn't recognize and prompted for formating. DRW can see everything inside it. One was corrupted old disk and it can recover 85% of data. Last was... this is amazing... recovered DELETED files, which can be dangerous actually. If you have loads of porn videos and thinking deleting to trash is done.... nop... your Daddy can still access them if he wants too... LOL.

Wish it has a version for Mac though.

Maybe you should keep a backup hard-disk.Many harddisks in the market are very prone to damage from drops.

Apologies to TS for hijacking your thread. Without knowing when our storage will fail on us, how many levels of back up do you guys have?

I currently have 1TB of data with another 1TB running as Time Machine on my Mac Pro. I was about to sell away my eSATA enclosure until I read the horrors of data failure. Maybe I shouldn't... hmmm...

There's a few shops in SLS that do data recovery; it can cost anything from $300 to $1,000+

All hard disk will fail; it's a matter of time.

Therefore, it's important to backup, backup and backup.

Yup.. you can bring your HDD down for them to do a check, they will then give you a quote. If you are alright with the quote, they will proceed with the data recovery. You need to tell them which directory or folder to recovery from. If you think the quote is too high, you can always cancel the job which will cost you $50. www.adrc.com.sg
