Advises needed: What flash to get ??

Hi I have a 30d, after yesterday bugis fashion shoot, think i need to get an external flash?

Think the best one now for Canon is 580ex, but the price tag is putting me off.. :bigeyes:

So thinking of alternatives. Can anyone who has used other brands advise me on this?

Sigma 500G ? How good is it?

what about going for a lower canon model like the 550ex...not exactly built for digital slrs, but at the time when there was no 580ex... most people were using this...the 420ex can also be considered....
