Advice: Tamron 17-50mm or Tamron 18-270mm

Hi Guys!

Getting my second lens and hoping to get some advice from gurus here. Choice between Tamron 17-50 or Tamron 18-270, which would be a all round walk about lens? My current set up is D200 with 50mm f:1.8. TIA! Would be great if you could let me know the prices and where I could get them, getting it by this week.

Also looking for MB200 grip with AA Battery holder, kindly let me know if you know anyone selling? Thanks!

Wow, you only shot with a 50mm. Thats an interesting choice for a 1st lens, never the least a great lens
Personally, I would go for the Nikon 18-200 VR!

go for 18-250mm for walk abt lens. I have the 17-50mm and brought it overseas as walk abt lens. Some times, i just wish i have longer focal length for some candid shots. though 17-50mm is f2.8 throughout, if using as street shoot, u will norm stop down to ard f4 or f8 , thus 18-250 will be a better choice. both lenses have their strength and weakness. after owning the 17-50mm, i think i will get something like 18-250mm as well. depend wat you are shooting.

Thanks for the reply, seen very positive write ups on the new Tamron 18-270mm (seem to be a tad better then nikon VR 18-200mm) price at about $900+. Since I already got the 50mm f:1.8 I think I am more incline to get the 18-270.

I have the same dilemma too... end up, i give up both and got canon 24-105 f/4L..

18-270 is a good all-in-one lens but understand that at the ends is where it will be at the weakest. simply said, if you take a 200mm prime and a 18-270@200mm photos and cannot tell the difference side by side...no problem then.

The 17-50 would give nicer pictures but may be limited by the range in certain scenarios where having range is an advantage.

I recommend the 18-270 only if its for the convenience. Also, i heard that its AF is slower then most so take note if shooting animals or rather kids. (The minute it has lock, better fire up the D200 burst mode.)

I used D200 with Tamron 17-50 f2.8, Nik 50mm f1.8 and 18-200 VR before I went for current setup.
I don't know about Tamron 18-270 but my old 17-50 buzzz and focus ring rotates when it focuses, a little slow(and sometimes hunts) in lowlight. and if you are not fond of doing PP, be ready for CAs in your pics especially when taking in contrasty (and backlit) situations with flash filled-in. apart from those, pics are quite sharp and colour was nice. lens size and weight was perfect(for me at least) on D200.
if you can give up extra 50mm reach, the Nikon 18-200 VR would be a preferable consideration over the Tamron 18-270 imho...Tamron's f6.3@200mm+ focal length will do its job only in bright outdoor shoots. and its VC is doubtful to be as good as Nikon's VR..
since you already own 50mm f1.8, why don't you go for a 18-200 VR for your 2nd walkabout lens:thumbsup: ..fast & silent focus, very efficient VR, and nice pics..though some shots at its wide end may show soft corners and distortions(compared to your 50mm pics)

Finally bought both lens, reminder for those who wants to take up on the promotional package of Tang's voucher from JelCorp the last day is tomorrow(17/01/09). Got the 17-50mm at 600 and 18-270mm at 900 but top up 10 for a 67mm and 72mm Hoya UV filters. Cheers!
