Advice on Malay Muslim wedding.

For those who have done Malay Muslim wedding event shoots before, need some advice from you... like what is important, what are the important rituals, what kind of situation is the 'must take' kind and everything about Malay Muslim wedding that a photographer needs to know. :dunno:

bean,

i am not a photographer but i can give you a basic rundown of what a malay wedding would be like.

akad nikah
this is the official solemnization of the wedding. it must be perform by the kadi or sometimes the father of the bride in the presence of at least 2 male witnesses (but there usually lots more people than that). it can be perform at the bride's house or at the mosque. the bride may or may not be present. what is done here is the groom will 'accept' the 'offer' from the kadi. the kadi will be holding the groom's right hand when this is done.

sarong cincin/batal air sembayang
the groom will put the ring on the bride. usually accompanied by exchange of kisses.

marhaban
a group of male will gather in the bride's house to 'sing'/recite the koran. this usually last 45 mins or so.

kenduri
the is the wedding luncheon. crucial moments would be the arrival of the bride & groom (if it's not done in the bride's house) otherwise will be the arrival of the groom (at the bride's house).

bersanding
the is when the bride & groom sits on the stage where relatives give them their blessings using scented water, flowers & rice.

kenduri and bersanding may be on a different day as the akad nikad, etc. but basically it is the sequence as above.

my suggestion is that you follow ur kaki for the photoshoot....ask them what's going on......for the akad nikah & the sarong cincin, it is very important for the photographer not to miss ANYTING when the proceeding took place, same goes to the bersanding and the bertandang...as for the berinai section theres where ur skill of potraiture, pose & ect plays a vital role, gotta work very closely with the make-up artist(mak-andam)....

The marhaban is very interesting, and should make for good pictures. Use a wide lens and get up close. If you have a video, that's even better. The sound of the chanting can be quite hypnotic.

forgot to mention, there's another practice where they call it the "tepong tawar"...this is where the bride and groom sit on a wedding dias and hte procession of sprinkling of fragrance water and some other things takes place...this is done after the solemnization....

and sometimes they have the silat and the kampong-playing guys when the bridegroom arrived @ the bride's place....

you aint seen nothing yet........if there is a CANTONESE, HAKKA, TEOCHEW, HOKKIEN AND OTHERS the malays have MELAYU, BAWEAN, JAWA TIMOR, JAWA TENGAH, JAWA BARAT, BANJAR, BUGIS AND OTHERS TOO .... the differences is minimal but important...........
