advice on lenses to get for my D90

Need advice on which lens to get for my D90.
Mainly use for portrait, landscape n walkabout for tour.
me already have a sigma 10-20 wide angle and the 18-105 kit lens.

looking at
nikon afs 35mm 1.8
nikon afs 50mm 1.8
nikon afs 16-85
18-200 macro

may i know which is better to get?

if your style of shooting are those as mentioned, i'd get 18-200mm for ease of use.

since you have got 18-105, why not 70-300? 50 1.8 if u like portraits. get both since 50mm is just 180 bucks maybe its just me

how many lenses are you prepared to carry?

if two, 18-200 and 10-20 should cover most of your needs.

if three, then go to some shop to see if you like 35 or 50 for portraits.

For landscape and tour, your current setup is sufficient, infact, the 10-20 is a good wide angle lands for landscape. But if you find yourself lacking in the tele end, either replace your 18-105 with the 18-200 or get a 70-200/300.
As for portraits, if you are not looking to do those thin dof style, your current setup is sufficient too.

If you want to add a lens for portrait or achieve thin dof style kind of portrait shots. I would say got for the 50mm 1.8 for half body / head shots, or the 35mm for full body shots.

There not a single lens that will do all three of those you mention well.

I really do not recommend the 18-200. Jack of all trades, master of none.

your 10-20 is perfect for landscape.
your kit 18-105 is perfect for walkabout and tour.
For portraits you can consider the 50/1.4 and 85/1.4. If budget is tight 50/1.4 and 85/1.8. 50/1.8 is cheap but since you have no budget restriction, might as well go for the F1.4 versions. But if you are ok with Manual focus, one of the best portrait lens you can buy is the Voigtlander Nokton 58mm F/1.4 SL-II.

While you are at it, make you have a decent tripod setup. No landscape photographer will leave home without one.

your categories still a bit vague and generalised.
There aren't any specialised portrait lenses. I can use my kit lens to take portraits as well.
So if you ask me for ideal lens for landscape, walkabout and portrait, I'd say the kit lens.

If you find that you shoot portraits at around 50mm, and you want a lens that gives you thinner DOF, then you have your answer.

If you find that you shoot portraits at around 85mm, and you want a lens that gives you thinner DOF, then you have your answer.

If you find that you turn the zoom ring of your kit lens to 105mm and still not "tele" enough, then you have your answer.

Am not trying to put you down, but usually such questions are best answered by the one who will be using the setup.

1. You have vague requirements (What do you intend to shoot, how you like to shoot etc)

Depending on your comfort level of using primes, the 35/1.8 would be a good addition as a 'normal prime' on APS-C

I beg to differ. Do you know how many people wished they can even afford a DSLR, not to mention an affordable semi-serious amature level ones like ours? :bsmilie: Each of us have a different budget constraint. Don't envy, live and max it out what you already have - and produce the best possible results with it.

I hope NOT to have the entire Nikon collection of lenses, coz to have them all means I'll be dead broke. I don't want to be a collector, I just want to be able to produce good results within my means! Having plonked down $$ for a good UWA means I can't afford any more lenses for a good number of months, maybe years! Versus a number of you who have a number of superb lenses for the same amount and can do a lot more things?

No point lamenting on what you don't have, go out (or stay indoors) and shoot already!!!

uncle here can only afford PnS HX5V... really envy those youngsters that sling a 70-200/2.8 with their D90, must shoot many exposures just to pick a decent photo with very thin DOF so model can stand out... but forgot to look out that skinny lamp post protuding behind the model's head. :sweat:

uncle from old fashion 35mm era... i suggest... not sure if 28-70mm F2.8 and 70-200mm F2.8 then is equal to what lenses now? suggest include a 85mm F1.4 and a 135mm F2 for stunning portrait photography.

uncle old liao... just only wish to use PnS camera... set Intelligent Auto all the way.

I believe the killer range would be 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II of the current series. Yup, your portraiture lenses recommendations are still the same (still the samo lenses, btw). I believe the newer 85mm VR (forgot if it's f/1.4 or f/2.8) is about to debut soon. That may relegate the older lens to surrender its throne to the new comer - pending comparison results/reviews of course.

Another lens recommendation would be the Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 (full manual, with CPU) for portraiture. Equivalent to 87mm on a D90.
