Hi

I just bought a 550D with 18-55 lens found that the zoom is not enough for me. Intent to get a budget new lens with better zoom range. wondering what lens will be the best?:)

Get the other kit lens. 55-200, if I'm not wrong.

mostly depends on what you are planning to shoot

Another good kit lens would be the 18-200, can check out the B&S

But TS already has the 18-55. So the logical thing would be to get the other one, the 55-200, as opposed to getting the 18-200 and then having one redundant lens. Reason why I am recommending the kit lens is because he "just bought" his 550d with 18-55 which probably implies he isn't into any specialist photography such as birding (yet).

The best lens won't fit the term 'budget lens', but the mentioned 55-200 gets good comments here. Google for reviews.

I tink ur refering to the efs 55-250. Pretty sharp lens from what i heard here in CS. Selling ur 18-55 to get a 18-200 is not a bad idea too. If your not too picky with the IQ that is.

can always just sell it off and get the 18-200

Definitely that's also an option, up to TS to decide.

Hmm yup I think it's 55-250. Thanks for the correction. I'm not too familiar with Canon :)

gotta define what you mean by 'budget' first.
To some people it might be $1.5K ;)

if you don't mind switching between 2 lenses for wide and telephoto (wrongly described as "more zoom" by newbies), a good choice for < $400 bracket would be to pair the 18-55 with the EFS 55-250.

the alternative is to sell off the 18-55 and get an "ultra-zoom" lens, such as the 18-200. But for the times when you just want a light 'go-anywhere' lens, the 18-200 might feel too heavy.

it's really your decision.

i had that same problem when i just got my dslr, 18-55 is too short. and i have a tight budget.
what i do is i sell my 18-55 for $120. and spend $650 for a new Sigma 18-200.
My mindset is that one lens does all, but u are a jack of all trade, master of nothing.
my 1 cents =)

Hi all thanks for the precious for the precious advise i guess will aim for 55-250:cool:

Option 1:

- Canon EF-S 55-250 f/4-5.6
- Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Option 2:

- Sigma AF-S 18-200 f/3.5-5.6
Then, Sell of 18-55, and get a External Flash.

it's all depand on what you really want and how deep is your pocket.
you might hit some of these words,
1. it is not bright/fast enough
2. it is not sharp enough

First know what you really want. if you don't know, stop and think. There are many people who give different advise. some good some great ! after all it is your pocket

if you can spare just a bit of cash, try renting the lens and use it to see if it suit your needs. Or borrow one from a good friend if possible.

Actually, why is the zoom range of the 18-55 not enough for you? What do you usually shoot?

I'm in the same situation & based on Canon's lens brochure, the 55 - 250mm lens is actually made to compliment your existing kit lens. I intend to get it as it's pretty light at 390g. Whereas the 18 - 200mm lens is heavy (to me)! The price range quoted at funan is between 360+ to 390+ for the 55-250mm. I found tis review very helpful:http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-55-250mm-f-4-5.6-IS-Lens-Review.aspx

First time I saw a Sigma with AF-S.... and it is canon mount too. :bsmilie:

Third party have many different abrievation though..

Tokina has at-x... Sigma has HSM and OS for it's motor and IS... Tamron has USD for it motor and VC to replace IS

so, the sigma 18-200 is meant for aps-c cameras.. So af-s is relatively the same..

huh?

sounds rather misleading.

Sigma uses the term 'DC' to denote lenses meant for APS-C sensors. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...
AF-S is a Nikon term for lenses with the built-in motor on the lens for auto-focus.

AF-S is not used in Sigma terminology.
