i feel the range is not here or there.

it is my main travel lens for film. used it for my europe trip on a f100 and it performed flawlessly, ok the VR does drain batteris quicker.

Right. It is a suitable range for film camera. But for DSLR, it is not wide enough as a walk around lens.
