A step too far...

Well, Singapore is not very handicap and family friendly. All it is doing is putting in access as an afterthought. Do you know they even have an MP having an official opening ceremony for the handicap access to Yishun MRT station? laughable.

Singapore is moving so fast, it tends to leave behind those who are not fit or fast enough. Its all to do with mindset really, and even though the govt is trying, they are not really setting the example for others to follow. Their policies is not aligned to helping those less able to. Being a country without natural resources, we can only stay afloat if we are ahead of the competition.

Buses in the UK have got low access and handicap lots. The bus driver will even chase people away from those seats if they see a wheelchair or stroller coming onto the bus. Passengers automatically move away if they see handicap and family with strollers boarding the bus too. They even have got areas for people to put their groceries and bags too. The drivers even wait at the bus stop until you put your things down and sit down properly. Although there is only one exit/entrance, people wait and take turns too.

The funny thing is that the buses are on time at each bus-stop. Every bus-stop has a schedule in minutes to tell you that what time the bus will arrive at your bus-stop and what time you will reach your destinations.

Other parts of europe are the same too.

Life here's too fast paced these days, all in the rat race to earn more. No time to step aside and help those left behind. Country's too busy building casino, resorts and holding car races and olympics. Those things bring in money you know?

not all london tube stations are handicap friendly, btw.. but they have it all laid out on the tube map.. so you could plan, if you so decide to take the tube.

on another note, there is no need to compare - even if all the monkeys in africa can break-dance, it doesn't mean a thing to the monkeys in our zoo, if you catch my drift

there are changes being made, that's for sure, there were no lifts when i was younger, at mrt stations, now there are.

the first comment on that page says it all - it's not just the government, most singaporeans are like that too

I guess we have sold our souls.

A cabbie not willing to open the door for a disabled person - how does he think the person will get into the taxi ? Doesn't it play on his conscience ? Does he even have one ?

A bus driver driving off in a hurry without giving a person on crutches time to steady himself ? Doesn't it play on his conscience ?

This is hardly any sign of a civilized society at all. Let's leave the government out of it.

Let's change the attitude of the people, starting with ourselves first. If you come across a disabled person that needs help, please take few minutes of your life to make sure that he/she is not left helpless. No amount of money will give us the happiness that a few moments of service will.

Thanks, friends.

that said, i have seen cabbies and bus drivers who took the trouble to help those less able - from wheelchair bound to the elderly.

one bus driver even took the trouble to get people to give up their seat for an old lady i saw. now that was heartwarming.

so while we worry about the other side, we must also try to remember that there are those who care :) whatever the case, it surely makes life more liveable

yes both of which mentioned are true in different ways.

the govt is not really to blame imo as well. they teach civil and moral education in sec sch, or at least during my times. taxi drivers are notorious but there are of course exceptions

the govt has gone a long way to reach out the handicap. supporting charity orgs, and more imptly, making singapore a more handicap friendly place from buses to shelter linking the whole neighbourhood. the mrt station is user friendly to blind people and wheelchair bound ones, but the extra and immediate help lies with our mindset, if the people are conservative and shy away from helping out of either disgust or shyness that should be the main course of concern.

human habits are v hard to change, esp singapoerans..not all of course. haha
