I think you really have to know roughly in mind what kind of portrait effects you want when you are at the location. For practice with your family members, you can start with the in-built camera fill flash technique first(some ppl will reject this straight away, but its there now for u to try.), if you are not happy with the result, move on to a reflector (i prefer those 5 in 1) if subject is behind the sun or under the shade. Use it for several times until u feel it's time to upgrade for an off flash technique. And don't forget, remember to do some research on "what kind of tools does what" prior to purchasing new toy.
