every product in the world is worth to buy if it is useful for you...
i own 50mm 1.4 (not much different from 1.8) and yes, it's worth every penny i spent. always carry this around and mostly, i use this for portraits...

Erm.... not having a 50mm does not necessarily means you are not serious. Just buy what you need.
Depends on what you need but 1.8 is a fast lens in case you're shooting in low light.

50mm f/1.8 is a prime lens thats worth to start with......... then when you find its usefulness, go for the f/1.4. But I am fine with 1.8, so still sticking with it. Spend your money wisely, buy what you need and that you enjoy it. Cheers!

i got one (50 f1.4) because I shoot at home at night in the room with my kids.
Have also 85 f1.8.
at night conditions and at home- either 50 f1.4 or 85 g1.8 - i dont need to use flash.

i got rid of my 50mm f/1.8 in less than a week after getting it as a free gift. never looked back. good to have but not a must have.
go for 35 mm. that is closer to a normal lens. i blur, bought 50mm thinking it was a normal lens. but turns out that on a crop frame camera, it's a medium telephoto.
i still find it very useful as a fast lens though. but now i feel like getting a 35mm prime as well. had i started with the 35mm, i would not really feel the need for a 50mm. it's easier to go closer than to go further IMHO

well it is a great lens 
but its also the worst lens you can buy.... if you don't use it! :think:

I used to own it before upgrading.
-Yes it's a real value-for-money lens, cheap and sharp.
-I only used it mostly for portraitures and some street shoots.
