why so quick to classify this lens as just a portrait lens?
It can be used for anything you can think of.
50mm is just a focal length.
You could even take landscapes with it.

you can also used it for macro, by adding filters, extenders or DYI stuffs. it is good and cheaper alternative for portraiture, but i wont call it portrait lens, it is a fun lens in general. u can also maximize the low-light capability of this lens.

It can be used to shot anything you want... I used the 50mm f.18 to shoot this ring shoot at a recent ROM. I thought it works fairly well. (the lens lah)

anyway its quite affordable and light. Good for travels too!

My point is that Nikon doesn't market this lens as a "portrait lens", and neither is it inscribed on the lens.

agreed. you might want to add in "and it is not what you don't want it to be."
it depends on how you use it.

when i first got my 50mm prime, it was used for portraits, food photography, and low light photography.

bought a kenko extension tube, and it became my 'cheapo' macro lens

although i don't use this range as much as previously, can't deny the feelings i have developed with it =/

there are a few ways you can 'convert' your 50mm prime into a macro lens.
reverse lens, teleconverters like raynox or extension tubes from kenko.

you can go read up more if you are keen into macro photography but is a bit hesistant to spend hundreds on a dedicated macro lens.

I don't understand your question.
If you want to stop it down and put ND filters, also can wat.
It's not any different to drag out long exposures with this lens than a UWA, for example.
