I have both but its really a matter of preference.. better is very subjective, why not force yourself to shoot at only 50mm or 85mm on your 18-200 for a typical day and find out which focal length suits your shooting better..

Hmm. I say 35mm ha..ha
Every people has different taste lor.

Just review your old collection photos, see in the photo property to find which focal length is your favorite. 24 or 35 or 50 or 85 or 105 or 135 or 200 mm.

Hope this help :)

50mm on crop or 85mm on FF for me:)

Up to you... Really depends on your style...

one is micro usm motor, other what ring type usm.
both will do the same job?

bro, depending on ur shooting style lor...

anyway, most of us have both of them... :bsmilie:

why not getting 50 F1.8 + 85 F1.8?

yup..the 50 1.8 and 85 1.8 is elcheapo..im using a manual zuiko 50 1.4 and the focus sweet spot is thin thin thin..need to be careful but if its spot on, its priceless.. ;)

It's $600 lol.

new? yes..checked B&S, can get one around 500 or less, still elcheapo than buying a 85 1.4. :thumbsup::thumbsup: CZ 85 1.4 is a dream :angel::cool:

85 f1.8 anytime

Very sharp wide open. No problem with USM motor. I would rather adjust my shooting style to suit 85 focal length than take 50 f1.4

I prefer the 85mm 1.8 over 50mm 1.4
Try out both to see which you'll like

very different beasts. have to see what is your shooting style and preference. both are not replacements for each other. u need to be comfortable with the perspective, dof, sharpness, ca, etc etc from both lenses before u commit.

Rent. Try. Decide.

With the 50/1.4, I will try to move nearer if I need 85mm.
With the 85/1.8, what can I do if I need 1.4?
So if can only pick one, I will pick 50/1.4.
I have 30/1.4 and 85/1.8, find this combination works very well for me.

Elcheapo?

85 f1.8 is an extremely good performer in almost every single aspect. The autofocus is L level and beats the 50 1.4 hands down.

Not to mention a solid build.

This is a really good suggestion. Look thru your pictures and the EXIF data. What was the most common focal length used?
Otherwise, what have you found lacking in your 18-200?

Trying the 50 and 85 focal length on the 18-200 is a good start to eliminate the choices, but do take note that some things, such as CA, AF speed cannot be detected until you try the actual prime lenses itself.
