Hi Guys,

Need your suggestion here.
I was thinking what is the best way to upgrade:
to buy a 50D body or a 70-200 lens?
For now, i have canon 450D with 18-55 lens..
Planning to upgrade but confused which one to buy..

Pls suggest..
thanks!

How is your 450D limiting you in your shooting style? i personally prefer to use the money on lenses, camera bodies are always ever changing and now with the 7D annouced would you soon consider that if you get your 50D?

In other words, what is your reason for upgrade? To get on the latest hype in technology?

Why are you looking at a 70-200? Does the "L" in the lens make you feel pro?

Get the 70-200. You'll derive much greater joy and mileage out of it than an incremental upgrade like the 50D. Unless you're saying you've outgrown the limits of the current camera ?

Besides, you don't have that many lenses other than your kit one. So, a longer telephoto will be useful.

If it is the reach of the telephoto that is needed, honestly I will prefer a 70-300 IS. Much cheaper and good IQ nonetheless.

Unless the f/4 or f/2.8 at 200mm is that badly needed for the DOF.

I think it really depends on what you really need.

Telephoto lenses are not really good for everyday
applications (unless you shoot bird everyday haha).
I'm actually oversimplifying the usage of telephoto
lenses here. Quite obviously, the 70-200 is good for
wildlife and not just birds :), portraits, and some
even say landscapes.

My friend bought a 70-200 2.8IS last year and till
date, I think it has only seen the sun a few times
only.

If you're just looking to buy a new (better) camera
body, then I think you should hold your horses and
wait for the 7D. I've read pretty good reviews about
it.

If you're looking to buy a new lens because of a new-
found niche where a telephoto lens will fit the bill,
then I guess you should go for it! The next question
is then to decide which one of the four 70-200 lens to
get... each one has its own fan base, strengths and
weaknesses.

If you're just thinking of buying the 70-200 lens because
Canon says it's the best it's got, then you might want
to talk to people who have first hand experience using
them and/ or rent them out to try for yourself before
diving into your pockets.

Good luck!

fair enough..:)
it really helps indeed.

thanks guys!

I think 24-105 would be more useful for walk about.

Bro, not to challenge you but just for my own understanding that are you suggesting that if we are looking at upgrading to a 50D, we should wait for the 7D instead? ( I think its launched but don't know the price yet )

They should be of different class right?

Asking cause i also aiming at 50D.... :)

Cheers!

From the way it is marketed, 7d belongs to a level higher than the 50d. It is more in the same league as 5d, though I believe many will disagree for the fact that it is, since 5d is FF while 7d is aps-c.

There should be an upgrade to 50d and it is rumoured to be released nex feb.

Hi !

I have the same dilema before.I had a 400D and selling it to get a 40D.

Now I got a 50D and 70-200 F4L.:)

Burned a hole in my pocket though but satisfied!

In the context, if the kit lens is soft and lousy, changing the camera won't do any good.
