50 years ago, Orchard Road was a war zone.
On 10 March 1965, the MacDonald House was bombed (using a planted time bomb) by Indonesian saboteurs during the period of Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation.
The explosion killed three people and injured 33 others. The bomb left a mass of rubble after the blast, and every window within 100 metres was shattered.
29 bombs had been set off in Singapore by the time of the MacDonald House bombing in March 1965.
Lest we forget the period of unstable tension prior to our nation's independence.

That is when people understand why we need national service. We cannot out source everything.
