did you compare it with a DX body?

Personally I find the 35mm 1.8's AF speed not very fast compared to the 50mm 1.8.

I have the 35mm DX f1.8. Tried on the D3100 and its slow. Doesn't run too fast with my D3100 too so its probably the characteristics of the lens.

hey bro,
can post an image to show the vignette when used in FX mode? :D

Note that vignette will look obvious when shooting on big aperture.

Could TS post image to show vignette when shooting on f/1.8, f/2, f/2.8
Interesting to see the light fall-off ..

sure thing.... :)... will do it later in the day when home... surprisingly the lens is sharp at least to my standard...

interestingly I read some where the silent wave motor build into the AF-S lenses will slow down AF speed.... at least for the newer 50mm f1.4 G is slower then its D brother...
maybe tats why the 35 F1.8 is slow.... at least tats how i feel....

took casual shots using the lens on a FX body last evening... is it usable? guess its up to individual... it does create a nice pin hole effects though...

Nice pictures!! And thanks for the reaffirmation that the 35 f/1.8 works well on FF (for portraits)... a keeper!

Now back to the question, what is the major difference between the f1.4G and f1.8 DX?
Is it worth to spend more than 2k on the f1.4G if the f1.8 DX is really that good(not talking about "acceptable level" only, but rather "very good to superb level" on a full frame camera)?
I believe Nikon should be draw a clear line between these 2 lenses. What do you think?

thanks for the pics!
they certainly don't look like coming from a DX lens on a FF sensor!
you've got me planning on this lens. :bsmilie:

the above was shot using F8. Granted, you should be able to shoot at all apertures with a lens you bought. However, for the price, and the fact that one usually use it at large apertures (otherwise, you can just use a regular kit lens for such shot) this is not a problem at all.

My only gripe with not getting this lens (yet) is the fact that the copy i tried on my D300 did not focus well (or is slow) compared to the 50mm f1.8D. But when it did, the sharpness is amazing at f1.8. =p

That's cos in that picture the focus was to infinity.

Like I mentioned in the other thread, the 35 f1.8DX can be comfortably used only for people photography on FF in FX mode. If you want to also use a 35mm lens on FF for landscape, you will be better served with the older 35 f2 AFD or the upcoming new 35 f1.4 AFS.

Also remember this lens was never marketed and intended for use on full frame cameras in FX mode. The fact that it actually can, at medium range distances, is a big bonus. The icing on the cake is that it is sharper wide open than the 35 f2 AFD!

I had tried (rented) 35 f/1.8G, 35 f/2D, 85 f/1.4G, 85 1/.4D, 50 f/1.4G, 50 f/1.4D.
The AF-D version is faster indeed.

Thanks for sharing the comparison pics. Whether to choose 35 f/1.8G or 35 f/2D, it depends on every individual ;)

Saw these photos taken with Nikon 35mm f1.4G + D700 from Dpreview.com. Are they good enough to tempt you buying this new but expensive beast rather than going budget by using the 35mm f1.8 DX on D700?
