Yes... u can use the 24-70 on your D7000... but the field of view is quivalent to 36-105mm.
The 17-55 is equivalent to 26-82mm.
It really depends on the focal length that you like to shoot...
The answer is CAN. But question is which is preferred.
The D7000 is a cropped sensor. So the 24-70 may not be wide enough at the 24 end although the 70 end is fine.
Using the 17-55 gives wider coverage at the wide end. In future, you can buy a 18-200 VRII to cover the long end.
Think SYSTEM, i.e. select lenses that eventually come together as a system that complements your DSLR.
Only one point in favour of the 24-70 and that is you plan to go onto FX bodies in the near future.
I had FX lenses since my 35mm-Film shooting days. When I used the cropped bodies like D200, D300, I kept these FX lenses. So when I went to D700 (FX body), I added on with the 24-70/2.8G and also the 70-200/2.8G VRII.

I am asking because amazon is offering usd300 off the 24-70 f/2.8.
Kit lens is 18-105mm... then it will be contradicting to get the 24-70mm since it is equiv to 36-108mm??
I like the 24-70mm or even the 17-55mm f/2.8 becos of their fixed aperture, built quality and ultimately ... the image quality.

Both are great lenses. You just have to understand your preferred range of focal lengths and select the lens. I personally favor the 24-70mm.
Kit lens can achieve similar image quality when stopped down enough. The only reason you should get those lenses are for their large apertures. If you shoot only landscapes, the kit lens is sufficient, a better lens would be a wider one, or a longer lens, depending on how you want to shoot your landscapes.
You have to know what you are going to shoot in order to decide what lens to buy.
D7000 has high MP and so is demanding on the lens. I wouldn't suggest 3rd party lens. 17-55 is more practical for DX but if you do have a timeline to move to FX or to have FX to co-exist with your DX, then get 24-70 and 14-24. If not, just get 17-55.
The Tamron 17-50 is almost as sharp as the 17-55 DX. The Sigma 50/1.4 is sharper than Nikon 50/1.4
I don't know what you are talking about third party lenses not being as sharp as Nikon/Canon lenses, that is just a myth.
The original question by TS is to decide between the two lenses. Both are good lenses - one slightly longer and one slightly shorter/wider.
For normal shooting, both lenses will be OK.
However for landscape using a cropped body, he'll need to go wider beyond 17mm, e.g. down to 14mm or even 12mm.

shots I took some years ago while visit JiuZhaiGou. Many of them were shot with the Nikon 12-24mm/f4 on a D200 (cropped sensor). I have since gone on to a D700 (FX) hence I shoot with the 24-70mm/f2.8. However, when I expect to shoot spectacular sceneries and landscape, I bring along the Nikon 14-24mm/f2.8 for landscape shots with the panaromic effect. They're stunning. Point is this: to get wide enough for spectacular landscape shots ON A DX BODY, you need to get down to 14mm or 12mm or 11mm. There will be some distortions and that will depend on how well the UWA lens is designed. If you look at image DSC_3533, there is perpective effect when shot from a low angle, but notice the columns of the building are still straight!
That's a really good UWA lens IMO.

focal length remains the same, field of view doesnt.
DX has a crop factor of 1.5x compared to FX, which means, the field of view u get on DX at 17mm is the same as the field of view u get on FX at 25.5mm.
DX lenses are made with a reduced image circle at the rear element for use on smaller DX sensors, while FX lenses are made with a bigger image circle for use on larger FX sensors.
so if u use DX lenses on FX bodies in FX mode, u will get heavy vignetting at sides as the image circle of the DX lenses is optimally designed for use on DX sized sensors (except 35mm f/1.8G DX)
while if u use FX lenses on DX sensors, u will get to enjoy the "sweet spot" advantage, taking only the middle of the image circle of the FX lenses. Vignetting is very low compared to using DX lenses on DX sensors. u will get better border quality as well.
Yes the lens still a 17-55, but the image still goes through the crop factor, and it will end up at (an equivalent of) 1.5x the focal length of whatever you set the lens to.

no. it's the fact that u r using a DX body.
i repeat: focal length does NOT change. only field of view is affected.
be it a FX lens or a DX lens, as long as it's mounted on a DX body, the field of view on DX is the same as the field of view on FX of wadever focal length u use on DX body x crop factor of 1.5.
just that u enjoy the "sweet spot" advantage using FX lenses due to the smaller size of the DX sensor.
