18-200 mm VR + step-up adapter to 77mm

I intend to get the Vr lens + a UV filter too but don't want to waste money on buying all sizes of filter. Is it a good idea getting a 77mm filter + a step-up adapter ring 72mm-77mm for the lens? Any recommendation of UV filter for the VR lens so I can read up more about them

Yes. You can do that but you can't mount the lens hood after that. My advice is to get the correct size for UV or NC as protection then you can use step up rings for other filters like C-PL, Soft1, etc.. However, for me, I find the hood very important for protection as well as preventing flares.

To add to that, you also cannot use your lens cap/cover because it is a bigger thread size at 77mm. Suggest you get a proper UV filter that fits your lens nicely -- UV filters aren't that expensive, as compared to a CP filter.

You can use the converter to use with the more expensive CP filter instead.
