Hi All,

One of my team member pulled out of the trip last minute due to commitment so I have one place left for the Japan trip coming up this 15th Feb. It's a 16 days trip. 10 days in Hokkaido and 6 days in Nagano. Some of the major highlights will be Red Crowned Crane, Stella Sea Eagles, White-tailed Sea Eagle and Snow Monkeys. Total cost estimated is ard 3k ( incl international and domestic flights and trains ).

Current team members are : Me, Winston, Alvin, Hari.

15th Feb 2008 - 25th Feb 2008 Hokkaido (10days)
Accomodation+Dinner is ard SGD$ 887
Car Rental is ard $250 ( excl petrol cost )
1 day Guiding fee by Matsuo is $50
2 Eagle boat trips is $220 (optional, for anyone don't want to go on the boat trip )
TOTAL: SGD$1187 per person + $220 = $1407


15th Feb (Fri)
Overnight flight from Singapore to Tokyo, Narita airport

16th Feb (Sat)
Domestic flight from Tokyo, Haneda airport to Kushiro Airport. Arrive at 4.30PM.
We will have our dinner most probably at the airport.
Rent 4WD and drive approx 3hr (120km) to Lodge Fuhren. Arrive around 9.30PM.
Accomodation: Lodge Fuhren, 2 rooms. 4,700 yen per person = SGD$59

17th Feb (Sun)
Full day shoot ard Fuhren + surrounding areas. I know the key places to go. Will discuss when we are there.
Accomodation: Lodge Fuhren, 2 rooms. Including Breakfast & Dinner 6200 yen per person = SGD$77.60

18th Feb (Mon)
We will get Matsuo-san to guide us as he is very experience bird photography guide. Guiding fee: 20,000yen = SGD$250. So divide by 5 person, SGD$50 each
Accomodation: Lodge Fuhren, 2 rooms. Including Breakfast & Dinner 6200 yen per person = SGD$77.60

19th Feb (Tue)
Morning shoot around Lodge Fuhren and then drive off towards Rausu at 2PM.
Drive 3 1/2 hours (140km) to Rausu.
Reach Minshuku Washi-no-yado at 5.30PM.
Accomodation: Minshuku Washi-no-yado , 2 rooms. Including Dinner 8800 yen per person = SGD$110


20th Feb (Wed)
Morning "Eagle boat" at 5AM
Afternoon explore Rausu area for deers and fox
Eagle Boat: 9000 yen per person = SGD$112
Accomodation: Pension Rausu-kuru, 2rooms including Dinner 8000 yen per person = SGD$100


21st Feb (Thu)
Morning "eagle boat" for Stella Sea Eagle.
Afternoon drive off at 2PM to Lake Kussharo, Akan. 21/2 hr drive (100km)
Arrive at 5PM at Kussharo-Gen'ya Youth Guesthouse
Eagle Boat: 9000 yen per person = SGD$112
Accomodation: Kussharo-Gen'ya Youth Guesthouse , 2 rooms. Including Dinner 6650 yen per person = SGD$83


22nd Feb (Fri)

23rd Feb (Sat)
Whooper Swans at Lake Kussharo in the morning. Explore Akan National Park until late afternoon at 3PM.
Drive off to Tsuri Village, Kushiro. all the way to Hotel Taito.
Hotel Taiho is close to the Ito Crane Sanctuary and Otowa bridgewhich photographers take pictures of cranes in their roost, river bank in the cold river mist.
Accomodation: Hotel Taito , 1 room. Including Dinner 8445 yen per person = SGD$106


24th Feb (Sun)

26th Feb 2008 - 1st March 2008 Nagano (5days)
Accomodation+Dinner is ard SGD$ 280 ( we save $20 in total by not having breakfast )
Car Rental is ard $250 ( excl petrol cost )
TOTAL: SGD$530 per person excluding the bullet train from tokyo to Nagano.


26th Feb (Tue)
Domestic flight from Kushiro Airport to Tokyo, Haneda airport at 11.10AM. Arrive at 1PM.
1 hr for clearing custom, 1 hr to Tokyo train station, 1hr 30min to Nagano Stn. Rent a car from Nagano Stn and drive to Uotoshi Ryokan. Arrive around 5PM.
Accomodation: Uotoshi Ryokan, 2 rooms. Does not include breakfast. Dinner only on the first night. 4404 yen per person = SGD$56

27th Feb (Wed)

Afternoon drive to Karuizawa Bird Forest. It's at Naka-Karuizawa. Refer to page 4 of Karuizawa heights.pdf.
We will stay at Lodge Ariake.( http://www.karuizawa.jp/ariake
) . It's 15-min walk away from the best part of the forest.

But today, think we only got late afternoon left to shoot the birds at the feeders.
Accomodation: Lodge Ariake, 2 rooms. 4500 yen per person = SGD$56
1st March (Sat)
This place we can take ourtime as forest shooting cannot start too early also coz no light. Can take our time have breakfast and shoot tyhe birds at the feeders.

2nd March (Sun)
Morning last minute shoot at Karuizawa. we can leave anytime and head to Nagano Stn and then return car. take bullet train to Tokyo.

3rd March (Mon)
We can wander ard Tokyo and wait for our flight in the afternoon. Flight back to SG.
 

Looking at the links, I suppose to make the best out of this trip, you need at least a 500-600mm lens?

You can never have a lens that's long enough so to shoot birds, so its preferable to have a 500 - 600 mm, or if you are lucky enough, the latest 800 mm lens (Canon). But seriously as we are hoping to shoot larger birds, a 80 - 400 mm lens should suffice.
