Four local lensmen hold exhibition to promote digital photography to the masses

Saturday, 21 August 2004

Four photographers hope to inspire their fellow HDB-dwellers to make art, through photography. Their exhibition, Small arms… Big Matters!!! aims to convey their belief that seemingly ‘small’, inexpensive tools can produce ‘big’ and beautiful results, and that anyone can pick up digital photography and produce art.

Armed with affordable, compact digital cameras, the quartet traipsed through Singapore’s heartlands to capture the uncommon in the commonplace, the exquisite in everyday life. The four lensmen come from four different backgrounds: one is a cabby, another’s an engineer, the third’s a visual artist, and the last member of the group is a photography instructor and former press photographer. Francis Lee, Andy Tong, Vidson Ng and William Goh draw upon their rich, disparate experiences and histories to create unique perspectives that are encapsulated in their various photographs. All four share a common love for photography, and are members of the Tampines North Community Club Photographic Society.

Said Francis Lee, who used to work at Singapore Press Holdings publication Streats as a photographer: “We think that photography should be for everyone, for the masses. We hope that through our exhibition, the average member of the public, the heartlander, will be encouraged to pick up photography as an artform.

“We hope that everyone who visits the exhibition will see for themselves that photography is something that anyone can pursue – it isn’t the costly or exclusive pastime that some think it is. It is very affordable, and it is accessible.”

To help illustrate their point and vision, the foursome chose to work with the digital medium – a medium that has revolutionised the art and science of photography, and which has and continues to make photography much more affordable and accessible to increasing numbers of enthusiasts and amateurs.

The photographers will also conduct workshops on digital photography during the weekends. Members of the public, secondary school and junior college students from photographic societies and clubs will be invited to participate in these workshops.

Continued Lee: “We want to share our passion for photography with as many people as possible; we enjoy interacting with others who are interested in photography, and ‘bonding’ with them via this medium.”

Global multimedia organisation Canon, which has, over the years, developed technology that has benefited people from all walks of life, and which has helped to make photography increasingly accessible to more and more people, will sponsor all equipment used by the four photographers. The images will also be printed onto Canon photographic paper using Canon printers.

In order to reach out to the masses, the quartet decided to hold the exhibition at the Tampines Regional Library, where there is a good mix of students and adults from a wide demographic spectrum. Taking place from 4-18 September 2004, the event will attract passers-by with little or close to no knowledge about photography as an art form, as well as avid lovers and enthusiasts of photography.

The exhibition will open on Saturday, 4 September 2004, at 11am at the Tampines Regional Library. All four participating photographers – Francis Lee, Andy Tong, Vidson Ng and William Goh – will be present at the opening.

INTERVIEWS with all four photographers can be arranged.

Up for the day.

Have been to the exhibition today and saw all the 4 photographers there.
(Andy, William, Vidson and Francis)

In short, I have only one rude comment...................... the picture are bloody good

The photo are very well taken and compose, also an interesting part, I notice one of the photo (the one showing the hand with window glass as background) was taken inside the exhibition itself. Wonder if anyone notice it.

Also, forgot to ask them, how and where to take the photo of the moon with bats? :)

Hi,
Am glad that you like them. We took 2 years in preparing this exhibition and went thru' a lot of selection of our pictures. The hand picture were taken during our 1st exhibition in 2002 while the 'Bat Dance' picture is a montage of 2 different images by Andy.
Hope to see more shutterbugs at our exhibition and we're open to your comment or...critic. Thanks.

Been there and seen their exhibits. Like the picture entitled "Invite" very much. Wish they will post it on Clubsnap for others to view it too.
