I attended the workshop today. It was great!!!! Concepts were explained very clearly and good examples used to illustrate the points. Great job!!!!

    Should I Buy a Canon 7D??

You could spend money on lenses first and continue to use your bro's camera. For e.g. an utlra-wide angle lens and macro lens would open up very different possibilities for you and allow you to develop your skills better.

    Arts Performance, no flash allowed

Bring along a monopod/tripod too which helps when you want to capture motion blur with slower shutter speeds.

    Macro Focus Issue

Another way is to "block" the wind to mimimise movements ;p

    50 f1.8 vs 35 f2

I had both and sold both in favour of the 50 f1.4 which I seldom use too :p I'm lazy and usually go with a zoom (18-200 IS stayed on my camera most times). I do find 35f2 better for general photography while 50mm focal length is more suited to shooting small kids (both on crop sensor). 28...

    Canon EOS 40D to 50D

never felt the urge to upgrade from my 40D when 50D is out. 7D is a different case though, I fell in love with it when it's announced ;p

    Canon 17-55mm / Canon 24-70mm & Canon 70-200mm

for general events a 18-200 IS would do as well especially if you could use flash ;p anyway, not many customers would be looking for CA in photos unless they are photo enthusiasts too.

    24-70 vs 24-105

Image quality is pretty alright when you stepped down on the kit lens though (say to f8). I've used the first version non-IS 18-55 kit lens for 2 weddings and the couples like the results.

    EOS550d with Canon 18-200/Sigma 18-250/Tamron 18-270

I have the Canon 18-200 IS and Sigma 18-250 (long story why I had both). The Canon seemed sharper and focused faster. Anyway, you could try out the lenses at the shop. Try taking pictures at various focal lengths to compare with apertures wide open and stepped down to f8.

Should I buy Canon Hood EW-78D?

Most times it does not have impact on image. But when there are intense light sources (like sun, bright lights) in the environment, it helps reduce glare and lens flare from affecting the image (http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/lens-flare.htm). That said, if you watch out for...

    E3 vs 5DMkII

Interesting read. For me, the unerlying message is to use the right tool for the situation ;p Brand doesn't matter. I've used sigma lens on a canon body with an external nikon flash powered by olympus batteries and setup carried around in a fujifilm bag.

    24-70 vs 24-105

Just go for the lens that you'll be willing to bring out to shoot ;p weight is usually an important factor for me and after all these years, I've never really bought any heavy lens (until the sigma 150-500mm which i got recently but I'll be driving when I carry the lens around). 1 stop...

What do you guys think of third party battery?

confirmed (but based on what I read ;p i bought 2 originals for backup). 5D MK II and 7D doesn't show battery bar with 3rd party batteries. but good ones could last as long as the originals. was reading reviews that some 3rd party ones made for 5D MkII doesn't fit as well in the 7D even...

    monopod vs tripod

Another option is to get a lighter tripod or improvise on the surroundings. I've used railings, dustbins, fences, tables, camera bags, telephone booths etc to support my camera for low light shots.

    5D Mk II or 7D

5D Mk II is an easier upgrade for you, if you didn't want to buy a new lense to cover the ultra-wide angle. Anyway, if 5D worked for you, 5D Mk II would be a good fit. If you find something lacking in 5D, 7D is probably better for you and more of a new toy for you to play :)

    Canon dslr with Nikon lens

Nikon lens do not auto focus on Canon bodies and there won't be voiding of warranty. The Canon 18-200 IS is more than good enough. Get it if it fits your budget.

    Price drops for EOS 7D

BG-E7 is so cheap! :( Sigh. I bought a 3rd party here in the US for ~US$100.

    Sigma 70-300mm (Canon Mount)

Shooting without flash at night with low light, you should be using a tripod (or at least a monopod).

Hoping for a good catch with new lens and tripod in Hong Kong

You could check out this page which list the prices of camera gear in HK. http://www.ygdragon.net/index.php?page=photo/cameraprice.htm I usually go to Mongkok Wing Shing (conveniently located near Mong Kok station - exit from the Bank Centre exit and turn left). It's a big store which opens...
