You can't get the ambient color, so I suppose you get the right exposure (not a dark picture), but the color was wrong. Is this statement correct? Then is it possible you use the wrong White Balance? I don't know how your picture looks like, so the best I can do is to make assumptions. Maybe...

Try using layer styles and a lil bit burning tools.. But you must have the "feeling", coz if not then your image after burning wouldn't look as nice as the example.. Its the sense rather than the technique.. :) But both are really important ;)

Maybe you can share us both photos. One using high ISO where you can get some of the the ambient, and second when you use lower ISO. I also had this problems and what I did was use a bounce card and fast-focusing lens with small apperture number. Maybe the PROs in this forum later can help...

Indoor or outdor party? Did you bounce the flash? For indoor and dark environment I try to use max ISO400, sometimes ISO800 (but try not), coz noise starts to noticeable.. What body do u use? I believe D80 and D200 have a better noise control compared to my D70 :(

I think to achieve the effect that you want, you can use the method explained by lordsbm above. Now it is a matter on how neat can u select your object, you can use various way like magic wound (as mentioned), or maybe filter extract. Find which one you think its better. I Also have a photo...
