TS, it depends on your definition of "best" for what's best for you might not be best for the guy beside... It depends on: 1) Sensor size - Digital or 35mm 2) Range requirements - Primes, pseudo-primes, or wide range 3) Other "special" requirements e.g. aperture size, feel, weight... minute...

1) When one is already limited by aperture and shutter speed 2) When one wants to create a "noisy-grainy effect" (although this may be created during post-processing) 3) Some other reasons that I'm not aware of... :cool:

I feel that it's the softness that gives a nice "dreamy" feel to the portrait shots... If you really want a sharp 50mm f1.4, then you could consider the Sigma, but be prepared to pay a premium for that one. ;)
