    Help me decide

Thanks. Well, I think in noir there are always strange shadows being thrown around as the unnatural lighting is part of what noir is. The question is, is it effective? I guess it does come down to a matter of taste sometimes. Thanks. What further work would you suggest?

    Abducted

Good idea, but sadly I don't feel any energy in these shots.

    Help me decide

Thanks all for the input! Thanks, but the model is exactly the same in the two pictures (same layer), I'm just asking which version of the background works better, ie which is more 'film noir'? :)

    Trombonist

I agree, I did try to focus on his face but I guess my camera AF partially failed me in the poor light. I managed to squeeze a few more off but this particular one had the best expression by far. Sometimes you take what you get. :)

    Emptyform Fatal Sunset - Ecco

Honestly there is something about the overall feel in these thats just too tacky for me. The model did a slightly better job than in the Love Kills set though but there is still room for improvement. I would also try and choose the best from each 'setting'. For example I would consider #1 and #2...

    Trombonist

I tried a B&W conversion, but the color played too much of a vital role imo. I would argue that the most eyes would naturally be drawn to the face initially, and the arm provides a strong leading sweep towards the trombone and the low angle gives an imposing aura. Still, I can accept if you...

    Trombonist

Thanks. Yes I admit there are technical flaws, but sometimes in the sheer pursuit of technical perfection I feel that some people tend to overlook the overall 'feel' of a picture. Sometimes the flaws can detract, sometimes they don't. Whether they do in this picture, well I leave it up to you...

I must say I enjoy your work a lot. Much better than so many of the boring portraits of girls trying to act cute you see around here. Thumbs up!

    Chicago Back Alley

Thanks! It really is a personal fav. Good combination of subject, lighting and luck! XD

    Help me decide

Thanks. There are valid arguments for both I think. Noir is after all characterized by strange unnatural shadows. I'll probably just flip a coin.

    Trombonist

This was taken after the performance, I requested Fred Lonzo of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for a pose and he kindly obliged. Yes, the exposure is pushed like hell (effectively ISO3200 iirc) and it isn't tack sharp, but I just loved the atmosphere and the mood he projected.

    sucidal intention

Good concept. I'll give you a pass on the shoes bit, as it is mentioned earlier that the japs do it that way, which I think is ****ing weird, but face it, a lot of what the japanese do is weird anyway (and I mean no offense to any japanese who might be reading this). Now on to the photo itself...

Haha. The Blues Brothers was a warmup act for SNL, which became a real band, and made two movies. Great stuff. :)
