Hi,

So I was gifted this lens by a veteran photographer/old family friend; a Leica 50mm f1.4!

And I was so happy when I learnt that I was going to receive it. Because I probably will not be in a position to buy one for myself.

Once I had it though, I was gutted. It is is HORRIBLE condition, with fungus and generally dirty looking. I'll let the photos tell the story. I made one photo with this using an adapter on a Sony A7III and it was really hazy and unusable.

Here are the pics for the lens, taken with a Sony A7iii

My question is, how do I go about getting this lens serviced? and around how much would I have to spend, approx?

if u want it repaired really well, send it overseas. try Youxin Ye in US. he is known to do good work on leicas.

Thanks Nightwolf. I dont really want to send it anywhere, just thought I would get it in done in SG. Not a good idea?

oh... i dunno abt you.. when for a lens this valuable, you are really better off sending overseas. locally, there are some who will recommend camera hospital or de camera consultant. personally i usually send simple repairs to P&G. YMMV.. the reviews on places like camera hospital and de camera consultant are a mixed bag.

i had a bad experience before when my leica m3 was wrecked by a local repair. in the end, penny wise pound foolish.. i ended up spending even more to repair my m3 by Youxin Ye, when i shd have sent it to him in the first place.

I sent an email to Camera Hospital with some pics. No reply yet, I think I will take the lens there and let them see it and advise me. If the repair cost is goin to be too high, I will just keep it as a memento.

I wonder what is the ballpark valuation for this lens (in good condition) is, so I know how much I should go upto for repair?

eh... it is probably faster if you just call Steven @ camera hospital. he is a one-man-operation.

i don't think anyone can do anything about the body of your lens. hopefully the fungus/haze on the elements have not eaten away the coating.. best guess? $400-500? i once had to clean an old 50mm summitar. that worked out to be ard $200. i think regardless the cost, a 50Lux is worth saving, considering that even 'as-is' or 'ugly' grade 50Lux on Keh.com or ebay still can command ard USD900 provided if the lens elements are still viable. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

heck... it is not everyday someone gifts you a 50mm summilux... :p
