I'm starting this thread to share our shots during the outing during National Education Show 1 (sorry participants I made a mistake I thought it was still Combined Rehearsals 3, no wonder there were more fireworks and there's a reviewing officer instead of just a stand-in for the President) - https://www.clubsnap.com/threads/national-day-parade-rehearsal-outing-7-july-18.1727599/

Thanks for everyone who came, hope everyone had a great time as me, and hope I answered most of your queries. Any additional questions feel free to post here hopefully other seniors or me are able to answer you.

Posting my shots with some quick editing, both single exposures:

#2 - shot on my other camera, around 40mm focal length

Thanks for viewing and awaiting to enjoy shots from fellow shooters soon :)
Seniors do feel free to give your critique and comments so everyone can learn!

Edit:
The guide to posting images in Clubsnap is here: https://www.clubsnap.com/threads/guide-to-posting-images.1721401/
I used the method in post #4

Many thanks to thoongeng for the outing! Your explanation on how to control background exposure vs. fireworks by using the shutter speed was invaluable for my very first firework shoot. Here's my single exposure shots.

Thanks Fellowlad for sharing, really good event coverage!

Just some points for you to consider, for photos 2-4 usually it's better if separate elements do not overlap eg the flag cutting into MBS. Many times there are too many elements so no choice, for photo 3 you might want to see if you have a shot that was a moment before, where the flag does not overlap MBS and see if you like it better.

For the fireworks shots, generally very good exposure of the fireworks. For my own preference, I prefer not to have that many black areas where it's hard to discern the different elements so I might brighten up the background more while trying to recover some blown highlights

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I'm curious about why you prefer non-overlapping elements.

Usual composition rules, most commonly cited example is when there's something sticking out of a person's head... though can be broken if there's a reason eg you really want that thing to look like it's sticking out of the person's head hehe

Also applies to things that at too near or cut off by the side of the frame

Just an illustration, these are 3 shots I took that day before any processing

I chose B in the end, as for A and C the flag is overlapping or very close to the buildings

Big shout out to thoongeng for organizing the outing on 7th July 2018! It was an eye-opening experience for me to shoot fireworks for the first time and I really benefited a lot from your sharing. I have included herein 3 of my favorite single exposure shots for the day:

You're welcome! Very good for a first timer, fireworks exposure is good, background also quite well exposed. For the 3rd photo, there's a lot of these purple low fireworks firing so as you drag the shutter speed to expose more for the background, they get stacked and become overexposed. Can still recover (pull down slider of) the highlights a bit.

For your first photo I feel the white balance is too cool, as the buildings look too blue. You might want to consider warming it up a bit, which will also help the sunset colours in the background.

Any others in the forum who would like to give your valuable comments so everyone can learn? Thanks in advance :)

I took the liberty to edit some of the photos a bit to more of my usual preference... this one from BryanLeong I added a bit of warmth and recovered the highlights

This from fellowlad, I increased the overall brightness, and also tried recovering a bit of the highlights.

Just as an illustration, depends on everyone's preferences, no real right or wrong
