    I did not previously. So repeated the steps. 1. Installed batteries 2. As it whined, pressed the test button 3. The flash fired 4. Repeated test firing a few times 5. The whining continued and eventually saw the "Bat Standby" sign

    One Eyed Jack, Thank you for the service manual. I did have a copy of the same. I'll look up the working principle of a flash tube. I'm no expert in electronics though. I can check components and take measurements, and once in a while catch offending components.
