hi, changed the colour hue, cropped to follow 1/3 rule.

    Grey card? Why?

yah, really. the primary purpose of grey card is to meter light. white balancing is really only an issue in digital workflow*; which really shouldn't even be an issue if you're shooting in raw to begin with. simple google search on how to use a grey card...

    Portrait of a killer

;) thanks del for picking up the o'rly question for me! and ya, the shot is a little too small/cropped too tightly for any constructive comments.

    Greetings!

nice and effective!! i especially like the way you've cropped your photo. i don't agree that it would be anymore effective when you capture the moment where they actually do what they are doing. the artistic merit in this is that you know that they are communicating. no major comments, but...

    A photo back from NDP

if it was around 7 in the evening a shot which reflects the mood and ambience might be more appropriate. adjusting levels or brightness in photoshop is acceptable up to a certain level; past that & the loss of details will make the shot look too artificial. as it is, your shot suggests that it...

    Strobe light for S70

The lionfish's body itself looks like it's in focus; it's the little details which seem a little soft; for example if you look at the rocks behind they do not have the kind of sharpness which they should have. ditto that with lines on the left fin. imo, prolly due to movement? I'm going to...

    Photography assignment

hi, this is from the critique corners guideline. "When You Post: a) Members are only allowed to post ONE image PER week. This is to allow enough time for critiques to be written." but i do get your point. perhaps i'll post 1 image with 3 photos instead as a series. probably more effective...

    Questions on ND Filter

hi, from what i understand, a ND filter is used to slow down your shutter speed by a certain number of stops. for example, if you're trying to capture a waterfall on a bright day where your shutter speed may be 1/1000 for 0EV, you'd use a ND filter to "slow down" your shutter speed to say...

    Grey card? Why?

hi, i think you got it wrong. grey cards are used for metering purposes, not white balancing. ;)

    Strobe light for S70

ok i dont know why but it seems one of my reply from 2 hours ago got lost somewhere. perhaps i closed my ie tab before i posted. ddamd thanks for your long and detailed explanation! I think i am a fairly competent land photographer, and have at least rudimentary knowledge of lighting basics...

    Photography assignment

hi, it's largely about the light; in this case about how people work in terribly underlit spaces. but sigh, if i had to explain it then it's wrooong...

    Photography assignment

hi, part of the effect. otherwise the UNSW just looks like it's floating out of nowhere. also, it was shot through a polarizing filter.
