a battery grip gives a much better balance even in normal orientation especially when mounted with a heavy lens.

I looked at my EF 100/2.8 macro, there is some "wavering" of the blades as I focus but no where near the scale that can be regarded as "smaller aperture". actually this is not even the thread starter's problem :sweat: he is complaining that he can't control the aperture in Manual mode!

I think you should take the set up to one of those Nikon user meet ups and have some one show you how it works.

I had this lens when it was going for around $1K. For that price it produces serious barrel distortion and has terrible CA control.
